Teaching Instructions

This is lesson 3 of 8 in the unit "Active Adventures in PE". Lesson Title: Exploring Soccer Techniques Lesson Description: Students will be introduced to basic soccer skills, including dribbling, passing, and shooting. They will practice these skills through drills and small-sided games.

Exploring Soccer Techniques

Overview

Year Group: Upper Primary (9-11 years)
Class Size: 25 students
Duration: 45 minutes
Lesson: 3 of 8 in unit Active Adventures in PE
Focus: Introduction to fundamental soccer skills—dribbling, passing, and shooting
Curriculum Alignment:

  • PE National Curriculum (England, 2014): Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities; Use running, jumping, throwing and catching in isolation and in combination; Play competitive games, apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending.
  • Personal Development and Wellbeing: Encourage teamwork, communication, and fair play.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students will:

  • Demonstrate basic control while dribbling a football with both feet.
  • Execute short, accurate passes using appropriate techniques.
  • Show understanding of shooting towards a goal with basic accuracy.
  • Apply these skills in a cooperative small-sided game promoting teamwork and spatial awareness.

Equipment Needed

  • Size 3 footballs (one per pair)
  • Training cones (25)
  • Mini goals (4)
  • Bibs (for team differentiation)
  • Stopwatch or timer

Lesson Structure

1. Warm-Up (7 minutes)

Activity: Dynamic Tag

  • Students spread out within a marked grid (approx. 15m x 15m).
  • One student ‘it’ must tag others by gently tapping them on the shoulder while dribbling their football.
  • Tagged students perform 3 star jumps and rejoin.
  • Encourage quick direction changes, ball control close to feet.
  • Purpose: Increase heart rate, develop ball familiarity and agility.

2. Skill Introduction and Demonstration (8 minutes)

  • Introduce the 3 fundamental techniques: dribbling, passing, shooting.
  • Teacher demonstrates:
    • Dribbling: Using the inside, outside and sole of the foot to move the ball with control.
    • Passing: Striking the ball with the inside of the foot for accuracy and control.
    • Shooting: Using the laces of the foot for power and accuracy towards a target.
  • Use clear, visual modelling projecting English FA coaching principles (control, stance, follow-through).
  • Emphasise keeping the head up to develop spatial awareness.

3. Skill Development Drills (15 minutes)

A. Dribbling Maze (7 minutes)

  • Set out cones in irregular patterns forming a maze approx. 10m x 10m.
  • Students dribble footballs individually or in pairs, negotiating cones with close control.
  • Encourage use of both feet and different parts of the foot.
  • Variation: Timed attempts or ‘collect the cone’ challenges to add competitive edge and engagement.

B. Passing Pairs (8 minutes)

  • Students form pairs spaced 5m apart.
  • Practice passing and receiving using the inside of the foot.
  • Incorporate control drills: pass, stop ball with sole, pass back.
  • Progression: Increase distance and introduce passing on the move.
  • Add verbal commands (“pass”, “stop”) to encourage communication skills.

4. Small-Sided Games (12 minutes)

  • Split class into 5 teams of 5 for short 4v4 + 1 ‘neutral’ player matches with mini goals on reduced pitches (15m x 20m).
  • Encourage focus on dribbling to beat opponents, passing to team mates in space, and shooting accurately into the mini goal.
  • Rotate teams to ensure equal playtime and rest.
  • Teacher and assistants observe and provide targeted praise and feedback on skill application and teamwork.
  • Encourage players to apply learned techniques, highlighting positive examples.

5. Cool Down and Reflection (3 minutes)

  • Gentle jogging followed by stretching major muscle groups (calves, quads, hamstrings).
  • Group discussion led by teacher:
    • What techniques did you find easiest/hardest?
    • How did you work with your teammates?
    • Why is communication important on the pitch?
  • Emphasise enjoyment and encourage practice outside lesson.

Assessment and Differentiation

Formative Assessment

  • Teacher notes skill execution during drills and games—balance between encouragement and corrective feedback.
  • Peer feedback encouraged in small groups to develop self-awareness and social skills.

Differentiation Strategies

  • Lower Ability: Use larger, softer balls; reduce distances in passing drills; pair with more able peers.
  • Higher Ability: Challenge with weaker foot dribbling; increase dribbling maze complexity; lead small-sided game roles (captains, referees).
  • Physical Needs: Modify movement range, provide more space, or use seated passing drills for limited mobility students.

Cross-Curricular Links and Enrichment

  • Mathematics: Counting passes and goals to integrate numeracy skills.
  • English: Use of sport-specific vocabulary (dribble, pass, shoot, possession).
  • PSHE: Emphasis on respect, teamwork, resilience and fair play, developing personal qualities essential for lifelong physical activity.

Teacher’s Tips

  • Use praise focusing on effort and improvement to build confidence.
  • Incorporate music during warm-up to energise and set a positive tone.
  • Capture short video footage during drills for self-review and group discussions in future lessons.
  • Rotate small-sided teams frequently for balanced social interaction and peer learning.

This lesson ensures engagement through active, varied tasks while embedding key soccer techniques aligned with UK Physical Education frameworks, promoting physical literacy and social development in a fun, inclusive environment.
