Over the next 6 weeks you will be working on creating a double spread page like the one below, in your sketchbook.
Through completing this work you will learn the following things:
The “Visual Elements” of Art Colour theory Painting skills Creating lettering Which aspects of Art interest you How to create gradients Presentation skills Create a "Formal Elements Palette" – students draw a paint palette using the template and write the formal elements on the double page spread. Each segment illustrates one element (e.g., line doodles, textured rubbings).
This lesson is designed to cover aspects of the Key Stage 3 (KS3) Art and Design Curriculum under the UK National Curriculum. Specifically, it aligns with the following objectives:
This lesson begins a 6-week project aimed at creating a highly detailed double-page spread in student sketchbooks. Practical activities develop the foundations of formal Art skills, including colour theory, painting skills, presentation, and an understanding of the formal elements of art.
By the end of this lesson, students will:
Welcome Activity (5 Minutes):
As students arrive, ask them to study a large-scale visual displayed on the board that categorises the 7 formal Art elements. Beside each name is an example (e.g., photographs of organic shapes, doodles). They should jot down one example of an element in their sketchbook from observation.
Intent and Overview (10 Minutes):
The teacher explains the task for the day, tying it into the "Big Idea": How do artists use the formal elements to communicate and create impact? Clarify why fine presentation and attention to detail matter in Art portfolios. Show students a refined example of a double-page spread.
This phase mixes explanation with student activity.
Students will rotate between short exploratory activities to explore each element:
Goal: By the end of this section, students should have gained confidence in mark-making, tonal control, and a technique they can apply in their Formal Elements Palette.
At their tables, students will work on the Formal Elements Palette template. This consists of a paint-palette shape divided into seven segments, one for each element.
Due Next Week: Ask students to find an example of imagery (from a magazine or online art) that strongly represents one of the formal elements covered today. Stick it into their sketchbook and write 3 sentences on why it caught their attention.
This lesson sets the foundation for creativity while helping students interpret their artistic preferences. Over the 6-week project, they'll develop confidence through structured practise and reflect on which aspects of Art resonate most with them. A greater focus on ownership, creativity, and craftsmanship will prepare them for KS4 progression.
