Teaching Instructions

I want a lesson with a focus on vocabulary for a new text based on the short film 'the piano'. The children have watched the video and read the text. I want the children to learn how to use a dictionary. To use a dictionary to find the definition for the high level words in the text (nostalgia, melodic, serenity etc). I have used the grammasaurus text. I then want the children to find synonyms for the words and write sentences relating to the text using the words.

Overview

This 60-minute session is designed for a Year 6 class of 25 students, focusing on enhancing vocabulary skills through interaction with a new text linked to the short film The Piano. Following the National Curriculum for England’s guidance on vocabulary acquisition and understanding, this lesson equips students to confidently use dictionaries, explore word meanings and synonyms, and apply these in contextually rich sentences.

English Programme of Study (Year 6):

  • Vocabulary, Grammar and Punctuation

    • Pupils should consolidate and build on their knowledge of vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation.
    • “Apply their growing knowledge of root words, prefixes and suffixes, both to read aloud and to understand the meaning of new words they meet.”
    • “Use dictionaries to check the meaning of words that they have read.”
  • Reading: Comprehension

    • “Build on their skills of drawing inferences such as inferring characters’ feelings, thoughts and motives from their actions.” (linked through exploration of meaning and usage of vocabulary in context)

Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

  1. Confidently use a dictionary to find accurate definitions of challenging vocabulary from the text.
  2. Identify and write synonyms for words like nostalgia, melodic, serenity, and others from the text.
  3. Create meaningful sentences using these vocabulary words and their synonyms, showing understanding in the context of The Piano.

Resources Needed

  • Printed copies of the extracted text containing new vocabulary from The Piano (Grammasaurus text format).
  • Individual dictionaries (physical or digital - tablet dictionaries allowed if available).
  • Synonym charts or thesauruses (one per pair).
  • Whiteboard/interactive whiteboard and markers.
  • Vocabulary worksheet with word list and space for definitions, synonyms, and sentence writing.
  • Personal whiteboards and pens for quick formative assessment.

Lesson Structure

1. Starter – 10 minutes

  • Engage students by revisiting The Piano short film’s main themes briefly.
  • Display the words: nostalgia, melodic, serenity, harmonious, wistful on the board. Ask students to discuss in pairs what they think these words might mean; encourage guesswork based on the film’s mood and story.
  • Share quick definitions or what they know as a baseline to stimulate curiosity.

2. Main Teaching Activity – 25 minutes

Part A: Dictionary Skills (15 minutes)

  • Model dictionary use with one word (e.g., “nostalgia”) on the board. Show how to find the word alphabetically, identify its part of speech, and read different definitions.
  • Highlight how to select the definition that best fits the context of the film/text.
  • Pupils work in pairs with dictionaries to find meanings for the remaining words from the list. Circulate and support where needed.

Part B: Synonyms Exploration (10 minutes)

  • Provide synonym charts/thesauruses for pairs to find alternative words for each vocabulary word (e.g., nostalgia → reminiscence, wistfulness).
  • Encourage selection of synonyms that match the mood and tone of the film/text to deepen understanding.
  • Discuss as a whole class some effective synonyms found and their nuanced differences in meaning.

3. Consolidation / Application – 15 minutes

  • Students individually write three sentences using the new vocabulary or their chosen synonyms, relating sentences directly to the themes or scenes in The Piano.
  • Emphasise creative yet clear sentences that show understanding of meaning and mood (e.g., “The melodic tune of the piano filled the room with a sense of serenity.”)
  • Collect a few exemplary sentences to display (anonymously) on the board for peer feedback.

4. Plenary & Assessment – 10 minutes

  • Use personal whiteboards for a quick vocabulary quiz: show a word and ask students to write its definition or a synonym.
  • Ask two to three pupils to share their sentences aloud.
  • Reflect on how dictionary and synonym use helped deepen their understanding of the text and encouraged richer writing.

Assessment for Learning

  • Formative: Observation during dictionary use and synonym matching; review of sentence writing for correct contextual vocabulary usage.
  • Summative: Check vocabulary worksheet for definitions and synonyms; quality and accuracy of sentences produced.

Differentiation

  • Support:

    • Provide word cards with simple definitions beside dictionaries for students who struggle.
    • Pair less confident readers with stronger peers.
  • Challenge:

    • Encourage more able pupils to use the dictionary to find and explain etymology or word origins of vocabulary words.
    • Ask them to write extended sentences or short paragraphs incorporating multiple vocabulary words.

Extension Ideas

  • Create a class ‘Vocabulary Wall’ displaying words, synonyms, and example sentences inspired by The Piano.
  • Use audio clips of piano music and ask students to write their own descriptive sentences using new vocabulary or poetic language.

This vocabulary-rich, dictionary-based lesson nurtures independent learning skills aligned with the statutory requirements of the National Curriculum and deepens comprehension of literary texts through precise language understanding and context-based application.
