Students will participate in activities that enhance their agility and coordination.

Fielding Skills Mastery

Overview

Unit: Cricket Skills for All (Lesson 4 of 6)
Duration: 45 minutes
Class size: 9 students
Age group: 9-11 years (KS2, Year 5/6)
Subject: Physical Education
Focus: Developing catching and throwing techniques to enhance fielding agility and coordination.

Curriculum Links

  • National Curriculum for Physical Education (England) - KS2 Programme of Study:
    • Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities.
    • Use running, jumping, throwing and catching in isolation and in combination.
    • Play competitive games and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending.
  • Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE): Developing teamwork, communication and confidence through sport.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, all students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate correct catching techniques for different ball heights and trajectories.
  • Use proper throwing mechanics to improve accuracy and distance.
  • Exhibit improved agility and hand-eye coordination through targeted drills.
  • Apply fielding skills in small group game scenarios with sportsmanship and effective communication.

Resources Required

  • Tennis balls / soft cricket balls (1 per pair)
  • Cricket gloves (for demonstration, optional)
  • Cones (for marking boundaries and agility zones)
  • Marked cricket field or sports hall
  • Stopwatch / timer
  • Whistle

Lesson Structure

1. Introduction & Warm-Up (8 minutes)

Aim: Prepare body and mind for skill development; introduce lesson focus.

  • Dynamic Warm-Up (5 mins):

    • Light jogging around the marked area (2 mins)
    • Agility ladder drills or cone weaving (3 mins)
    • Arm circles and wrist mobility exercises (cool down shoulders for throwing)
  • Set the Context (3 mins):

    • Brief chat about the importance of fielding in cricket (catching can change matches!)
    • Explain today’s focus: catching techniques (high catches, low catches) and throwing mechanics (overarm, side-arm accuracy).

2. Skill Development Stations (20 minutes)

Aim: Focused skill practice in small groups; tailored feedback.

Divide students into 3 groups of 3. Each group rotates every 6-7 minutes.

Station 1: Catching Techniques

  • Coach demonstrates:
    • Hands “soft hands” technique (forming a W with thumbs and forefingers)
    • Catching at waist height vs overhead catching
  • Pupils practise catching tennis balls softly tossed by each other.
  • Variations:
    • Bounce catch (let ball bounce once, then catch)
    • High catch with a small jump
  • Key cues: eyes on ball, fingers relaxed, catch close to the body.

Station 2: Throwing Mechanics

  • Focus on correct grip, stepping forward with opposite foot, follow-through pointing at target.
  • Use cones placed at 10m distance as targets.
  • Students throw underarm and overarm at targets focusing on accuracy rather than power initially.
  • Partner feedback to encourage good posture and follow-through.

Station 3: Agility and Coordination Drills

  • Set up a short shuttle run marked by cones (5m apart).
  • Students sprint to a cone, pick up a ball from ground, and throw at a target before returning to start.
  • Drill enhances reaction times, coordination, and combines the two skills practiced.

3. Mini Game Application (12 minutes)

Aim: Simulate fielding scenarios in a fun, competitive way.

“Catch and Throw Challenge”:

  • Split the class into 2 teams of 4 or 5 (rotate one student in/out for rest).
  • Set up a mini field on the hall or pitch - define safe zones and throwing targets.
  • Players take turns fielding — a ball is hit or rolled; the fielder must catch (or stop) then throw to a target or teammate to “run out” a runner.
  • Award points for successful catches and accurate throws.
  • Encourage call-outs like “Mine!”, “Catch!”, “Over here!” to strengthen communication.

4. Cool Down & Reflection (5 minutes)

  • Gentle jogging and stretching: focus on arms, shoulders, and legs.
  • Group Reflection:
    • What catching or throwing tips helped the most today?
    • How did working as a team improve your fielding?
    • Why are good fielding skills important in cricket and other sports?

Differentiation Strategies

  • For less confident pupils: provide softer balls and reduce target distance. Use peer mentoring.
  • For more advanced pupils: increase throwing distance and introduce higher-speed catches (with safety in mind).
  • Use verbal praise and checkpoints to ensure all students understand key skills.

Assessment & Feedback

  • Use formative assessment through observation during stations and mini-games.
  • Use “2 stars and a wish” verbal feedback model:
    • “You timed your catch very well (star), your throwing side-step was strong (star), next time, try to keep your eyes on the ball until it reaches your gloves (wish).”
  • Encourage self and peer-assessment through reflection questions.

Extension Ideas

  • Assign students “Fielding Champions” role to lead warm-ups or skills demonstration in next lessons.
  • Introduce video analysis for pairs to record and review throwing technique.
  • Link to maths by measuring and recording accuracy distances or reaction times.

Notes for Teachers

  • Reinforce safety: use soft balls, monitor space to prevent collisions.
  • Encourage inclusive language and celebration of all ability progress.
  • Use whistle signals to organise station rotations smoothly and keep momentum.
  • Build on student enthusiasm by relating fielding skills to professional cricket matches briefly.

This lesson is designed to be lively, engaging, and specific to the developmental stage of KS2 learners, providing a solid foundation in cricket fielding skills aligned with UK educational expectations.
