The Forbidden Garden Marian's hands trembled against the rough, crumbling, russet brick wall as she crept towards the entrance. She could feel her heart pounding in her chest. The branches and leaves of the holly bush scratched Marian's face, attacking the alien invader. "For your own safety, please: do not go in the walled garden, Marian!" her elderly grandparents had regularly warned her on every visit, on each and every year of her life. Despite her pleading, and arguments attempting to convince them to let her explore, they had never relented. Most ten year olds would have listened, but not Marian. Through the bushes, the sun's dwindling light punctuated the shadowy wall and danced in her eyes. Marian squinted and held her hand up to her forehead, seemingly in mock salute to her elders who knew nothing about her whereabouts or plans. Her brown unruly curls fluttered in front of her thin lips, which were pursed together in determination. "They can't stop me now," she thought. On the final few steps, squeezing past the thorny roses, she snagged her grey thread-bare dress, creating a new hole. Marian did not notice. Marian truly hoped that her grandparents would never know where she'd been, but even if they did - she didn't regret this. She would have given up her pony and every trip to the beach to finally understand what they were so keen to hide from her. She glanced at her pocket watch. Quarter to 3. She had just enough time for one quick peek. Marian dashed forward On finally reaching the gate, there was one last difficulty: a padlock. Marian would not be stopped by this — this was her chance! After a momentary frown across her freckled forehead, Marian reached into the deep pockets of her pinafore and pulled out a long, bent, thin piece of metal that had a former life as a hair pin. With a spin, a bit of force and a clunk, the lock obediently sprung open. "Yes!" grinned Marian. She immediately removed the padlock and dropped it on the cobbled path, forced the bolt across and with her gut somersaulting and breath held, she scurried past the iron gate. With trepidation, she turned to face her destination... Nothing could have prepared her for the sight that lay before her..
