Overview
This 60-minute lesson focuses on enabling Year 9 students to confidently discuss their future plans and ambitions in Spanish. Following the National Curriculum for England (MFL Key Stage 3), the lesson develops students’ abilities to express ideas about their aspirations, using relevant vocabulary and grammatical structures, and supports intercultural understanding.

Lesson Structure
1. Starter (10 minutes): Vocabulary Activation & Pronunciation
- Activity: Flashcard Speed Round
- Display flashcards of professions and ambition-related words (e.g. médico, ingeniero, estudiar, viajar, ser famoso).
- Students shout out meanings and try to pronounce the words correctly as a class.
- Teacher models any difficult pronunciations.
- Students then work in pairs to make sentences using “Voy a...” or “Quiero...” with these words.

2. Introduction & Input (10 minutes): Grammar Focus – Near Future & Simple Future Tense

3. Main Activity (20 minutes): Reading & Comprehension + Speaking Practice

Task 1 (Reading): Students read two short letters from Spanish teens describing their future plans and ambitions.
- Example text includes use of near future and simple future tenses.
- Students highlight verbs in near/simpe future tense and new vocabulary.

Task 2 (Comprehension Questions):
- Answer questions in English about the texts to check understanding (e.g. What does Maria want to study? What job does Juan hope to have?).
- Discuss cultural similarities/differences in ambition and study between Spain/UK.

Speaking: In pairs, students create a short dialogue based on the texts, practising asking and answering questions about future plans (e.g. ¿Qué vas a estudiar?).

4. Production (15 minutes): Writing & Speaking – My Future Ambitions

Writing: Students write a short paragraph (5-7 sentences) about “Mis planes para el futuro y mis ambiciones,” using both near and simple future tenses, vocabulary from the lesson and expressing their personal ambitions.

Speaking: Volunteers present their paragraphs to the class or in small groups. Encourage peer feedback and positive reinforcement. Optional recording on tablets for self-assessment.
Curriculum Link: Expressing personal and imaginative ideas in spoken and written French demonstrating knowledge of grammar and vocabulary (KS3 Communicating).
5. Plenary & Assessment (5 minutes): Quiz & Reflection
- Quick interactive quiz (e.g. Kahoot! or hand signals) to identify correct verb forms and vocabulary.
- Reflection: Students say one thing they have learnt and one word/phrase they want to use in real life.

Differentiation & SEND Support
- Provide vocabulary lists with pictures for lower ability students.
- Offer sentence starters and scaffolding for writing task.
- Pair weaker students with stronger language learners for speaking activities.
- Use visual aids and repetition to reinforce grammar concepts.
Extension Ideas
- Encourage students to research a Spanish-speaking professional or celebrity and present their ambitions/career.
- Use a telenovela clip or video interview of a young person talking about their future to integrate multimedia comprehension.

- Monitor student use of target tenses in speaking and writing; adjust next lesson focus accordingly.
- Review speed and appropriateness of activities to ensure engagement and coverage of all learners.
