Lesson Structure
Starter (5 minutes)
Engage with Free Time Vocabulary
- Display images/flashcards of popular free time activities (e.g. jugar al fútbol, leer, ver una película, salir con amigos)
- Quick whole-class brainstorm: students shout out activities they enjoy; teacher writes these on board in English and Spanish.
- Introduce or revise key infinitive verbs associated with these activities.
Purpose: Activate prior knowledge and set context for future tense practice.
Introduction to Near Future Tense (10 minutes)
Modelling and Explanation
- Write the formula on the board: voy + a + [infinitive]
- Explain: this means “I am going to [do something]” indicating future plans.
- Present a clear, personalised model sentence on the board, e.g.
“Este fin de semana voy a jugar al tenis.”
- Use a timeline diagram showing present, near future, and other tenses to visualise location of voy a + infinitive.
- Highlight the verb ir conjugation in present tense (voy, vas, va...) with brief repetition.
Interactive modelling: Ask individual students for their own examples orally, correcting gently and praising attempts.
Guided Practice: Listening & Speaking (10 minutes)
- Play a short audio clip featuring 2–3 people talking briefly about what they are going to do in their free time.
- Distribute transcript with some blanks in voy a sentences for students to fill.
- Check answers as a class by replaying clip, eliciting responses.
- Pair students and ask them to discuss what they themselves are going to do this weekend using voy a + infinitive.
- Teacher circulates, provides targeted support and feedback.
Independent Activity: Writing (15 minutes)
- Students receive a worksheet listing infinitive verbs related to free time and simple prompts (e.g. “What are you going to do after school?”)
- Task: write 5 sentences about their future free time plans using voy a + infinitive. Encouraged to use different verbs and include time expressions (e.g. mañana, el sábado).
- Include a challenge: extend sentences by adding reasons, e.g. “Voy a ir al cine porque me gusta ver películas.”
- Teacher monitors and supports; peer assessment for one-to-two peer corrections focusing on verb form and vocabulary.
Plenary (10 minutes)
Active Recall and Formative Assessment
- Quick-fire quiz on mini-whiteboards: teacher says infinitive + subject; students write the correct voy a + infinitive sentence. For example, "I / dance" → Voy a bailar.
- Use “Exit tickets”: Each student writes one future plan sentence addressing the question: What are you going to do this weekend?
- Collect slips to assess understanding and inform next lesson’s focus.
Differentiation
- Support: Sentence starters and vocabulary lists for lower ability or EAL students.
- Challenge: Encourage high-ability students to write extended sentences including irregular verbs/issues with agreement where relevant.
- Use peer pairing strategically for mixed ability support.
Assessment for Learning (AfL)
- Continuous verbal feedback during speaking and writing activities.
- Use of mini whiteboard responses for instant formative check.
- Exit ticket writing assesses individual understanding of key grammar point.
- Observation of paired work for use of target language spontaneity.
Extension Ideas (if time allows)
- Create a short roleplay in pairs where students plan a weekend together using voy a + infinitive.
- Introduce questions with ¿Qué vas a hacer...? to ask about plans and encourage interaction.
- Link future tense to cultural elements by discussing Spanish weekend activities.
Reflection for Teachers
- Did students grasp the structure and function of voy a + infinitive?
- Were students able to confidently connect vocabulary and grammar in original sentences?
- How effective was peer collaboration in reinforcing learning?
- What scaffolding worked best, and what might need adaptation next time?
This engaging, scaffolded lesson plan ensures Year 10 students build a solid foundation in the near future tense while applying it practically through free time vocabulary, meeting and exceeding expectations in the National Curriculum for Languages.
