National Curriculum Links

  • PE Key Stage 2 Framework:
    • Develop physical competence and confidence in a range of physical activities.
    • Engage in competitive sports and other activities that achieve personal bests.

Resources Needed

  • Cones (to mark areas)
  • Bibs/jerseys (to distinguish teams)
  • Footballs (appropriate size for age group)
  • Whistle
  • Stopwatch
  • Marked pitch area or suitable playing field

Lesson Structure

Introduction (5 minutes)

  • Warm-Up Activity:

    • Begin with a dynamic warm-up focusing on mobility. Include high knees, butt kicks, and dynamic stretches.
    • Lead the class in short passing drills in pairs to get them comfortable with the ball.
  • Discussion:

    • Explain the concept of spatial awareness and positioning. Use real-life examples from professional matches to highlight how players position themselves in relation to others.

Main Activity (20 minutes)

Part 1: Spatial Awareness Drills (10 minutes)

  1. Four Corners Game:
    • Set up four corner areas with cones.
    • Divide the students into groups of 6, assigning each group to a corner.
    • Call out different colours or numbers for students to move between corners based on the call. This encourages agility and awareness of space.
    • After a couple of rounds, switch the commands to add a football. For instance, when they reach a corner, they need to control the ball before moving again.

Part 2: Positional Play Game (10 minutes)

  1. Half-Pitch Match:
    • Divide the class into two teams (15 each).
    • Set up a small-sided game focusing on positional play, with an emphasis on maintaining shape and awareness.
    • Implement the following rules:
      • Players must maintain their positions (forwards, midfielders, defenders) unless they are transitioning during an attack or defence.
      • Encourage players to call for the ball and signal to teammates for space.
    • Stop play periodically to give feedback on positioning and effectiveness.

Closure (5 minutes)

  • Cooldown:

    • Engage the class in light stretching, focusing on major muscle groups used during play.
  • Reflection and Discussion:

    • Ask students to share one thing they learned about positioning and spatial awareness. Encourage them to give one example of how they successfully demonstrated these concepts in the match.
  • Reinforcement:

    • Reinforce the importance of these skills in football and other team sports.

Assessment

  • Observation: Throughout the activities, assess students on their ability to adjust their positioning dynamically during gameplay.
  • Peer Feedback: Encourage students to offer feedback to each other, fostering a culture of collaborative learning.

Adaptations

  • For students who may find certain aspects challenging, provide additional support through:
    • Simplifying commands in the Four Corners game.
    • Pairing them with more experienced players during the small-sided match for guidance.

Summary

By focusing on game awareness and positioning in this lesson, students will not only improve their football skills but also understand the strategic elements of the game, fostering team dynamics and individual contributions to overall gameplay. This lesson promotes essential skills in physical education that align with UK standards and encourages a love for sport among students.
