Teaching Instructions

I want the plan to focus on game play in handball, this is the first lesson of the unit and should recap all of the basic rules ( 3 steps, dribble, 3 steps. passing, who is allowed inside of the goalkeepers 'D', passing shooting and defending) there should be an emphasis on using a wall when defending and getting into position quickly. Due to limited numbers use small size pitch to enable game play

Year Group

Year 10 (14-15 years)

This lesson aligns with the Physical Education National Curriculum for England, Key Stage 4 programmes of study, specifically in:

  • Developing competence, control and fluency in techniques and tactics in team games, including handball (DfE Physical Education KS4 Programmes of Study 2013).
  • Applying knowledge of rules, strategies and tactics to enable effective participation.
  • Understanding the importance of teamwork, communication, and leadership within competitive games.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students will:

  1. Recap and apply the fundamental rules of handball, including:
    • Taking a maximum of 3 steps with the ball
    • Dribbling correctly between steps
    • Passing techniques
    • Understanding goal area restrictions (defenders and attackers)
  2. Demonstrate effective defending using the ‘defensive wall’ technique and transition quickly into defensive positions.
  3. Engage in small-sided games promoting tactical awareness and decision making under game conditions.

Success Criteria

  • Students limit themselves to a maximum of 3 steps with/without dribbling during gameplay.
  • Students correctly pass to teammates and respect the goalkeeper’s ‘D’ zone restrictions.
  • When defending, students create a defensive wall, communicating and shifting quickly to reduce scoring opportunities.
  • All students actively participate in small-sided games using correct rules and positions.
  • Students show improved awareness of spatial positioning when attacking or defending.

Equipment and Setup

  • Small-sized handball pitch or marked area (approx. half size of a full pitch) to enhance game flow with limited players
  • Handballs (size 2 for this age group)
  • Cones to mark the goal ‘D’ area for clarity
  • Bibs for team differentiation

Lesson Structure

1. Starter - 5 minutes

Objective: Reactivate prior knowledge of handball basic rules in a dynamic way.

  • Activity: “Rule Recall Relay”
    • Split the class into two teams, standing in lines.
    • Teacher calls out a rule cue (e.g. “Dribble”, “3 steps”, “Passing”, “Goal D”) and the first student runs to a cone and back, shouting out the full rule to the team (e.g., “You can only take 3 steps when holding the ball!”).
    • First team to correctly say the rule wins the round. Rotate quickly through different rules.

2. Skills Refresher - 10 minutes

Objective: Practise core skills and rule application in small groups.

  • Set up 3 stations focusing on:

    1. 3 Steps and Dribbling Drill – Students move forward, demonstrating 3 steps with and without dribbling. Emphasis on ball control.
    2. Passing and Receiving – Pairs practice chest and bounce passes, emphasising accuracy and correct catching technique.
    3. Goal D Restriction Awareness – Students practice defensive positioning outside the goal ‘D’ with cones marking the area. Attacker tries to receive a pass inside the ‘D’ to understand restriction.
  • Rotate groups every 3 minutes with short feedback.

3. Main Activity - 25 minutes

Objective: Apply all rules into modified game play with focus on defending using a wall and quick positioning.

  • Setup: Small 5-a-side handball game on reduced pitch. One goal each side with ‘D’ area clearly marked. 2 teams of 5 (including goalkeepers).

  • Rules Reinforced: 3 steps, dribbling, passing, goal area rules are strictly monitored by teacher acting as referee.

  • Defensive Focus: Coach students to form a defensive wall near the shooter, communicating and moving as a unit. Emphasise quick recovery runs after attacking.

  • Adaptations for Limited Numbers: If only 10 players total, use 5v5. If lower numbers, 4v4 with smaller goals/pitch.

  • Teacher Role: Active coaching from sidelines, giving tactical cues, reminding about wall, positioning, and rules during pauses.

4. Cool Down and Debrief - 5 minutes

  • Gentle jogging and stretch: focus on calves, hamstrings, shoulders.
  • Group discussion: What rules were easiest/difficult? How did the wall help defensively? What will you practice next time?
  • Written or verbal self-assessment against the success criteria.

Differentiation Strategies

  • Lower ability: Use larger, more open space at skills stations, provide extra demonstrations, allow more time for passing and dribbling drills, use visual cues (cones) for positioning.
  • Higher ability: Encourage advanced passing like behind-the-back or quick one-touch passing; challenge them to create complex defensive walls and ‘trap’ attackers; encourage tactical leadership roles (e.g. defensive captain).
  • Provide peer support by pairing mixed abilities in practice drills.

Extension Activity for Advanced Learners

  • Introduce a “shot clock” of 6 seconds in the small-sided game, forcing quicker decisions.
  • Ask advanced players to analyse and verbally guide the defensive wall in real-time.
  • Challenge them to perform fakes and feints during dribble before passing.

Notes for Teachers

  • Emphasise enjoyment through game-based learning rather than drills only.
  • Use positive reinforcement to build confidence with the rules.
  • Ensure constant movement and engagement to maintain fitness alongside skill development.
  • Reinforce clear communication – a core skill for tactical games like handball.

This lesson plan is designed to maximise learning and enjoyment within limited resources while closely following the National Curriculum’s emphasis on competence, tactical skills, and understanding of rules in KS4 Physical Education.
