Hockey Skills Launch

Overview

Curriculum Area: Physical Education
Key Stage: Key Stage 2 – Year 5
Lesson Duration: 60 minutes
Unit Title: Hockey Skills in Action (Lesson 1 of 6)
Lesson Title: Introduction to Hockey Basics
Class Size: 25 students
Lesson Theme: Building foundational hockey knowledge and basic stick skills such as grip, dribbling, and short passing.
Learning Environment: Outdoor playground/hard court or indoor sports hall (depending on weather).

National Curriculum Alignment

This lesson supports the Physical Education statutory requirements for Key Stage 2 in England:

“Pupils should be taught to use running, jumping, throwing and catching in isolation and in combination. Play competitive games, modified where appropriate, and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending."

Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of this lesson, pupils will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a safe hockey grip (hand positioning and posture).
  2. Dribble a ball in control through a marked area.
  3. Successfully complete a basic push pass to a partner.
  4. Understand three key safety rules for playing hockey in a group setting.
  5. Show improved spatial awareness and listening during group activities.

Success Criteria

Students will:

  • Hold the hockey stick with correct hand positioning.
  • Keep the ball close when dribbling through cones (less than 1m).
  • Complete at least 3/5 successful push passes with a partner.
  • Verbally recall at least two safety rules from the starter discussion.

Resources and Equipment

  • 25 plastic/foam hockey sticks (age-appropriate, lightweight)
  • 25 plastic hockey balls or soft balls
  • 30 cones (various colours)
  • Coloured bibs (6–8)
  • Whistle
  • Whiteboard or large poster for visual rules
  • First aid kit
  • Stopwatch (optional for performance timings)
  • Portable speaker for music (optional for dynamic warm-up)

Key Vocabulary

  • Grip
  • Dribble
  • Push pass
  • Safety Zone
  • Control
  • Field awareness

Teacher Preparation

  • Ensure a hazard check of the playing space before pupils arrive.
  • Equipment laid out in three zones (Warm-up, Skills Zone, Game Zone).
  • Whiteboard or poster with 3 visual safety rules: “Stick Down”, “Eyes Up”, “No Swinging”.

Lesson Structure

⏱️ 1. Warm-Up & Introduction (10 minutes)

Objective: Get moving, introduce hockey safely, and explain lesson goals.

Activity: “Traffic Lights” - Movement Game

  • Red = stop 🟥
  • Yellow = fast walk or side step 🟨
  • Green = jog/run 🟩
  • Add blue = squat & hold stick posture ⚠️

As students move around space, call colours to vary speed and motion. Introduce colour blue mid-way to practice hockey-ready stance.

Transition & Chat (2 minutes):

Bring students in, sitting in semi-circle with sticks placed in front of them.

  • Briefly explain the objective of hockey: “It’s a team invasion game where we try to score goals by moving the ball with our stick.”
  • Show how to safely hold and carry the stick.
  • Introduce 3 Basic Safety Rules:
✅ Stick stays below the knee
✅ Always look ahead when dribbling
✅ No body contact with the ball or others

Use the whiteboard rules for visual reinforcement.

🏑 2. Skill Zone 1 – Stick Grip & Control Positions (10 minutes)

Objective: Learn and practise the correct way to hold the stick.

  • Demonstrate “V” Grip: Left hand at top, right hand lower on shaft.
  • Build the “hockey ready” posture – knees bent, stick flat on ground, ball near.
  • Cue words: “Soft hands, flat stick, eyes forward”.

Activity: Partner Check-in

  • Pupils check their partner’s grip and posture using a 3-point checklist.
  • Teacher circulates and gives “stick stickers” to excellent examples.

Progression: One-foot balance stick hold – stand on one leg while keeping the stick steady. Builds control and body awareness.

🚦 3. Skill Zone 2 – Dribbling Practice (15 minutes)

Objective: Dribble the ball while maintaining control through space.

Setup: Cones in straight and zigzag lines (5m each).

  • Pupils line up in pairs. One dribbles while other watches to give feedback, then switch.

Teaching Point:
“Keep it close like a dog on a short lead” 🐶

  • Stick low
  • No tapping
  • Protect ball with body (eyes forward)

Challenge: “How slow can you go?” – Dribble the line in slow motion with max control.

Add variation for confident students:

  • Obstacle challenge (low hurdles or different width gaps).

👫 4. Skill Zone 3 – Push Pass in Teams (15 minutes)

Objective: Learn how to push pass accurately to teammates using correct technique.

Setup: Circle drill – 5 pupils per circle with 1 ball. Push pass across to opposite player.

Teaching Points:

  • Ball starts just ahead of back foot.
  • Push the ball using both hands on stick.
  • Keep stick on ground through contact.

Game Progression:

  • Add call-outs: Must pass after calling person’s name.
  • Competitive circle race: Which group can make 10 successful passes first?

🎯 5. Mini-Game – Dribble & Pass Relay (7 minutes)

Objective: Apply both dribbling and passing under light game pressure.

Mini teams of 5:

  • Navigate a dribble slalom before passing to next person.
  • Points for speed and accuracy.
  • Emphasise teamwork and cheering.

Modification for inclusivity:
Add a ‘walker’ lane with larger cones and rolling balls instead of dribbling for pupils with limited mobility. Support through peer coaching.

🌀 6. Cool Down & Reflect (3 minutes)

Cool Down Game: “Follow the Leader Dribble”

  • Students slowly follow teacher dribbling the ball in wide arcs.
  • Gradually slow to walking and stop.

Reflection Circle (1–2 mins):

  • “What did you find easy or tricky today?”
  • “Which safety rule is most important to remember from today?”
Use a thumbs-up/middle/down check-in for self-evaluation of their own ball control.

Cross-Curricular Links

  • Literacy: Use command words and key vocabulary during partner feedback.
  • PSHE: Encourages teamwork, sharing, communication, and respecting space.

Assessment for Learning (AfL)

  • Use formative assessment through teacher observation during drills and games.
  • Ask targeted questions:
👂 “Why do we keep the stick flat?”
🎯 “How does your partner help you improve?”
  • Use visual thumbs scale for students to self-assess how confident they feel with dribbling.

Opportunities for Differentiation

Challenge (More Able Pupils):

  • Use non-dominant hand to dribble.
  • Increase distance or narrow cones.
  • Introduce passing while moving.

Support (Less Confident Pupils):

  • Work in a smaller space/pair.
  • Larger ball or balloon for easier control.
  • Simplified tasks with slower pace and one step at a time.

Teacher Reflection Prompt

  • Were students comfortably managing control of the stick and ball?
  • Which safety rule needed the most reinforcement?
  • Is the equipment age-appropriate for continued development over the next 5 lessons?

⭐ End-of-Lesson Wow Tip

Consider finishing each session with a “Hockey Hero of the Week” – not for skill, but teamwork, encouragement, or perseverance. This promotes a growth mindset and supports a positive class ethos throughout the unit.
