PE Programme of Study - Key Stage 2 (Years 5-6):

  • Pupils should develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities.
  • Pupils should be taught to:
    • Take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges both individually and within a team (Focus on developing team collaboration and navigation skills).
    • Develop communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills within physical activities.
    • Evaluate their own and others’ performances and suggest improvements.

Geography Programme of Study - Key Stage 2 (Years 5-6):

  • Use maps, atlases, globes and digital/computer mapping to locate countries and describe features.
  • Use orienteering skills (map, compass, and symbols) with increasing confidence.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the session, all pupils will:

  1. Confidently use maps, symbols, and a compass to navigate an indoor orienteering course.
  2. Work collaboratively in teams, taking clearly assigned roles (e.g., navigator, clue-finder, timekeeper).
  3. Reflect on their team performance, identifying at least one success and one area for improvement.

Equipment Needed

  • Laminated indoor orienteering maps of the hall (simplified with symbols to represent stations/checkpoints)
  • Magnetic compasses (one per team)
  • Clue cards or tasks to complete at each station
  • Stopwatch or timer (one per team)
  • Roles badges (Navigator, Clue-finder, Timekeeper, Recorder)
  • Whistle for teacher signalling

Lesson Plan

1. Starter (10 minutes)

Objective: Introduce map symbols, compass directions, and team roles.

  • Warm-up: Quick physical game to energise students (e.g., "Simon Says" with compass directions: "Simon says face North").
  • Introduction: Show the simplified hall map with symbols and compass rose. Explain key symbols used for the stations in the hall (e.g. triangles, circles).
  • Compass basics: Demonstrate how to hold and use a compass to find directions (N, E, S, W).
  • Team roles overview:
    • Navigator = reads the map and compass.
    • Clue-finder = collects clue/task cards.
    • Timekeeper = monitors time and pace.
    • Recorder (if applicable) = notes down team answers or observations.
  • Assign students to teams of 3-4, distribute roles and equipment.

2. Main Activity (30 minutes)

Objective: Complete the indoor orienteering challenge using map, compass, and teamwork.

  • Instructions: Each team must visit 6 stations around the hall in the correct order, navigating by map and compass.
  • At each station: Teams find a clue card with a physical or mental task relevant to teamwork or problem-solving (e.g., simple puzzle, quick fitness challenge like 5 star jumps).
  • Assessment focus:
    • Observe how well teams use the compass to navigate.
    • Monitor effective communication and collaboration.
    • Notice how roles are fulfilled within the team.
  • Teacher role: Circulate, prompt where needed, provide encouragement and fair timing. Use whistle to remind teams to keep moving after 3-4 minutes at each station.
  • Adaptations: For teams needing extra support, provide simplified instructions or peer mentoring.

3. Plenary and Assessment (10 minutes)

Objective: Reflect on performance, identify strengths and areas for improvement.

  • Regroup all teams in a circle.
  • Each team shares:
    1. What worked well in their teamwork and navigation?
    2. One specific thing they could improve next time.
  • Teacher-led feedback: Highlight good examples of compass/map use and team roles demonstrated.
  • Discuss how indoor orienteering skills relate to outdoor activities and wider life skills (e.g. problem-solving, cooperation).
  • Optional: Quick Q&A or quiz on map symbols and compass directions.

Differentiation

  • For less confident pupils: Assign roles they feel comfortable with (e.g., recorder or timekeeper) and provide visual aids for compass.
  • For more confident pupils: Challenge them to lead navigation or help another team, ensuring leadership skills are demonstrated.

Health and Safety Considerations

  • Ensure the activity area is free of obstacles to prevent injury.
  • Emphasise safe movement while navigating.
  • Monitor students for signs of tiredness or stress.
  • Review and rehearse emergency stop signals.

Teacher Notes

  • Prepare maps and equipment in advance to maximise active time.
  • Strongly encourage positive communication and respecting each other’s ideas.
  • Use the plenary reflection to support pupils’ personal development, an important part of the National Curriculum’s emphasis on social skills in PE.
  • This session can form a valuable part of a wider unit on orienteering, adventure challenges, or problem-solving in physical education.

Summary

This lesson combines physical skills, cognitive navigation, and teamwork within the National Curriculum framework. It creatively uses indoor space, turning a hall into an engaging orienteering challenge that builds competence and confidence with maps and compasses—all while promoting self- and peer-assessment and social learning.
