Overview
This 45-minute lesson introduces Year 7 students to the basic parts of a plant and their functions. It aligns with the National Curriculum for England’s KS3 Science programme, focusing on understanding the structure and functions of living organisms (Biology). Lesson Structure
1. Starter & Pre-Assessment (10 minutes)
Objective: Gauge students' prior knowledge and activate curiosity.
- Hand out sticky notes and ask students to write down: “What do you already know about plants?”
- Students place notes on the board under a heading “What We Know” and “What We Want to Know”.
- Teacher facilitates a brief discussion grouping similar ideas and clarifies any misconceptions.
- Introduce the unit "Exploring Our Green World" and the focus of today’s lesson.

2. Sensory Exploration (10 minutes)
Objective: Use multi-sensory approaches to deepen engagement and observation skills.
- Display a variety of plants for students to touch, smell, and observe closely.
- Use the sensory kit:
- Soil: texture and smell
- Leaf rubbings: veins and shapes
- Flower petals: colour, scent, form
- Ask students to find at least one interesting feature of each plant part they observed and share with the class.

3. Teaching Input: Parts of a Plant and Their Functions (15 minutes)
Objective: Teach key content following NC requirements and develop clear understanding.
- Draw a large diagram of a plant on the whiteboard.
- Label each part: roots, stem, leaves, flowers.
- For each part, explain:
- Roots: anchor the plant and absorb water and nutrients from soil.
- Stem: supports the plant and transports nutrients and water.
- Leaves: carry out photosynthesis to make food for the plant.
- Flowers: reproductive organs of the plant.
- Use clear, age-appropriate language supported by diagrams and real plant examples.
- Invite students to annotate their own plant diagram worksheet with the information.
Extension: Explore the concept that plants are living organisms with specialised parts supporting life functions, linking to later concepts of cells and photosynthesis.
4. Discussing Importance of Plants (5 minutes)
Objective: Consolidate understanding of plants’ role in our world.
- Facilitate a brainstorming session: “Why are plants important to us and the planet?”
- Guide students to consider oxygen production, food, habitat, climate regulation, and beauty.
- List ideas on the board for later reference in the unit.
5. Plenary and Reflection (5 minutes)
Objective: Review learning, clarify understanding, and set expectations.
- Quick quiz game: Show images or words (roots, stem, leaves, flowers), and students call out the function.
- Recap the expectations for the whole unit — curiosity, respect for nature, teamwork in future activities.
- Ask students to write one new thing they learned today on the back of their worksheet.
