Overview
This 30-minute session is the first lesson in the unit "Journey Explorations: Transport Adventures" designed for Reception pupils (age 4–5). The lesson invites children to explore ideas about movement, transport, and travel through discussion and creative drawing. Children will begin to build their vocabulary and understanding of how things move and where journeys take us, laying foundations for Communication and Language, Understanding the World, and Expressive Arts and Design as specified in the National Curriculum for Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) – England.

- Begin to understand that transport is used for going to various places, including favourite holidays (Understanding the World).
- Express their ideas creatively through drawing (Expressive Arts and Design).
- Develop confidence speaking about their ideas in front of peers (Personal, Social and Emotional Development).
Resources Needed
- Large sheets of plain paper (one per child)
- Colouring materials: crayons, felt tips, coloured pencils
- A simple visual display with pictures of various transport types: cars, trains, planes, bicycles, boats
- Carpet or circle-time area for group discussion
- Sticky notes or small cards (optional) for children to draw simple transport symbols
Lesson Structure
1. Welcome & Introduction (5 minutes)
- Gather children in a circle on the carpet.
- Briefly introduce the unit title “Are We There Yet?”, explaining the theme of exploring journeys and transport.
- Show the visual display with various types of transport and ask open-ended questions:
“Can anyone tell me what these are?”
“Have you ever travelled by any of these?”
“Where did you go?”
Teacher Notes: Use clear, simple language and ask children to raise hands or say if they have a favourite mode of transport.
2. Brainstorming Discussion (8 minutes)
- Encourage children to talk about:
- Types of transport they know or have seen.
- How things move (fast/slow, by wheels, wings, etc.).
- Places they like to visit or would like to visit (holiday destinations).
- Model language by repeating children’s ideas and extending vocabulary:
“Yes, Sarah likes aeroplanes – they fly in the sky!”
“Tom says bicycles have wheels and you pedal to move.”
Assessment: Observe pupils’ ability to listen, respond and contribute ideas using full sentences or keywords.
3. Main Activity: Drawing Our Ideas (12 minutes)
- Distribute paper and colouring materials to each child.
- Instructions: “Now, I want you to draw your favourite kind of transport or a place you would love to visit on a journey. Think about how it moves or where it takes you.”
- Circulate to provide individual support, encouraging children to talk about their drawing as they work.
- Optional: Use sticky notes or cards for children who want to add simple transport symbols next to their drawing.
Teacher Tips: Encourage creativity and remind children there is no right or wrong way to draw.
4. Plenary: Sharing Drawings (5 minutes)
- Invite children to show their drawings to the class in a ‘show and tell’ style.
- Prompt with questions:
“Can you tell us about your drawing?”
“How does your transport move?”
“Where would you like to go?”
- Reinforce positive language, praise effort, and encourage listening skills while others share.
Assessment: Note pupils’ confidence and vocabulary during verbal sharing.
5. Conclusion & Next Steps (Approx. 30 seconds)
- Recap what was learnt: different types of transport and places to travel.
- Build excitement for the next lesson: learning more about how transport helps people get from one place to another.
Differentiation
- Support: Provide vocabulary cards/pictures for children who find it hard to recall transport names; offer one-to-one help during drawing.
- Challenge: Encourage verbally confident children to describe how their transport moves in more detail using new words (e.g., pedal, steer, fly).
Reflection and Assessment Notes for Teacher
- Note children’s participation in discussion and their ability to express simple ideas clearly.
- Observe drawing skills and how ideas are represented visually.
- Assess confidence in sharing, listening attentively, and responding with relevant ideas.
This carefully structured session will engage Reception pupils through talk, creative expression, and peer interaction, firmly rooted in the Early Years outcomes highlighted in the National Curriculum for England. It sets a positive tone for the "Transport Adventures" unit, promotes language development and observational skills, and connects classroom learning to children's own experiences and imaginations.
