Lesson Breakdown

1. Register and Question of the Day (5 minutes)

  • Register: Quick roll-call with each pupil saying a magical creature they would be if they lived in an enchanted forest.
  • Question of the Day:
“If you could have one magical power, what would it be and why?”
  • Encourage full sentences and expressive answers; note answers to revisit in warm-up.

2. Icebreaker / Warm-up – “Magical Movement Freeze” (7 minutes)

  • Pupils move around the room as their chosen magical creature (from register).
  • When teacher says “Freeze!”, everyone must pause in a magical pose (tableau).
  • Call out different emotions or situations (e.g., surprised, scared, joyful) for pupils to reflect in their frozen pose.
  • This builds physical control, imagination, and quick response skills.

3. Exam Preparation (10 minutes)

  • For exam pupils: Partner work practising their pieces focusing on adding expression (intonation, pauses, volume). Staff member circulate to support adding dramatic techniques such as pace and facial expressions.
  • For non-exam pupils: Group practice of a fun narrative poem with magical theme, emphasising clear diction and projection.
  • Encourage pupils to give positive peer feedback focusing on one thing done well.

4. Improv / Acting Activity – “Enchanted Marketplace” (10 minutes)

  • Divide pupils into groups of four or five.
  • Scene: “Imagine you are sellers and buyers at an enchanted marketplace selling magical items.”
  • Each group creates a short improvised scene where they negotiate trades and use magical item descriptions with flair and imagination.
  • Encourage pupils to use vocal expression, gestures, and body language.
  • For pupils less keen on improv, assign back-up creative writing: designing their own magical items and describing their powers on paper.

5. Performance (5 minutes)

  • Each group performs their improvised scene to the class.
  • Focus on eye contact, clear speech, listening to others, and confidence.
  • Brief teacher and peer feedback highlighting strengths and opportunities.

6. Team Game – “Spell Charades” (8 minutes)

  • Teams take turns acting out a magical spell or action without speaking (e.g., casting fire, flying on a broom).
  • Other team members guess the spell.
  • Encourages non-verbal communication, creativity, and teamwork.

7. Talent Show Practice (10 minutes)

  • Pupils practice pieces or acts planned for the upcoming Talent Show.
  • Teachers provide targeted advice on stage presence, voice projection and expression.
  • Allow pupils to support each other, creating a positive performance culture.

8. Cool-down Activity – “Magic Word Circle” (Final 3 minutes)

  • Pupils sit in a circle. Going around, each pupil says one magic-themed word from today’s lesson (e.g., wand, enchantment, sparkle).
  • Encourage slow, clear speech and calm breathing as a transition to pack-up.

9. Star of the Day and Closing (2 minutes)

  • Announce the “Star of the Day” – a pupil who showed excellent expression or collaboration.
  • Praise all pupils for effort and participation.

Adaptations and Differentiation

  • For quieter pupils, pre-assign roles or lines in the improv to reduce pressure.
  • Extra support staff can focus on individual exam pupils for specific speech challenges.
  • Back-up creative writing activity to engage pupils uncomfortable with public speaking.

Reflections for Teachers

  • Monitor pupil engagement with improv vs creative writing backup.
  • Encourage use of varied vocal tone and body language weekly to build confidence for exams.
  • Note improvements in clarity, projection and dramatic expression for exam assessment.

This highly engaging, magic-themed session balances creativity, exam preparation, and teamwork, adhering to UK standards focused on developing confident speakers and performers through enjoyable drama techniques.
