  • Projector for video and slides
  • Flip charts or large paper sheets
  • Sticky notes and coloured pens
  • Real product packaging examples (e.g., food, clothing brands)
  • Timer/stopwatch for activity pacing

Lesson Breakdown

1. Starter Activity (5 minutes)

Objective: Activate prior knowledge and relate marketing to students’ lives.

  • Write the question on the board: "What do you think marketing means? Why do companies need it?"
  • Students discuss briefly in pairs and write one word or phrase on a sticky note summarising marketing.
  • Stick notes up and group similar ideas; teacher highlights key words like “promote,” “sell,” “customers,” “advertising.”

2. Teacher Input & Definitions (10 minutes)

Objective: Introduce fundamental marketing concepts and terminology.

  • Present a concise definition of marketing: “Marketing is the process businesses use to promote, sell and distribute a product or service.”
  • Explain the importance of marketing in today’s competitive business environment using relatable UK business examples (e.g., Tesco, Boots).
  • Introduce four main types of marketing strategies:
    • Digital Marketing (social media, SEO)
    • Traditional Marketing (TV, radio, print ads)
    • Direct Marketing (emails, telephone calls)
    • Guerrilla Marketing (creative, unconventional)
  • Use real-world examples and images to illustrate each type.

3. Group Activity: Marketing Strategy Match-Up (15 minutes)

Objective: Deepen understanding through collaboration and application.

  • Divide students into 5 groups of 4.
  • Provide each group with a set of marketing campaign descriptions and ask them to match each campaign to its marketing strategy category.
  • For example, running an Instagram influencer campaign → Digital Marketing, handing out flyers in town → Traditional marketing, etc.
  • After 10 minutes, each group shares one example and explains their reasoning. Teacher corrects and elaborates.

4. Mini-Case Study Exploration (10 minutes)

Objective: Contextualise marketing theories using UK brands and consumer insights.

  • Show a short video clip (2-3 minutes) showcasing a marketing campaign from a well-known UK brand (such as Cadbury’s Christmas adverts).
  • Hand out a worksheet with questions:
    • What marketing strategy is being used?
    • Who is the target audience?
    • How does this campaign make you feel as a consumer?
  • Students discuss answers in pairs then share with the class, encouraging empathetic and critical thinking about consumer influence.

5. Plenary & Reflection (5 minutes)

Objective: Consolidate learning and prepare for next lessons.

  • On whiteboard, use two columns titled “Marketing is…” and “Marketing is not…”
  • Invite students to contribute statements from today’s learning.
  • Summarise key messages and preview next lesson: “Next time, we’ll explore how to identify and understand customers in depth.”
  • For stretch/extension, ask: “Can you think of a product you would like to market? How would you start?”

Assessment & Feedback

  • Formative assessment will be through group discussions and matching activity outcomes.
  • Teacher to circulate and provide immediate feedback during activities.
  • Use the plenary contributions to gauge student understanding and clarify misconceptions.
  • Potential to record student reflections to inform differentiation for future lessons.

Differentiation & Inclusion

  • Provide word banks for EAL (English as an Additional Language) students.
  • Use visual aids and real products to support comprehension.
  • Give additional guidance and scaffolding for students with SEN (Special Educational Needs).
  • Encourage peer support during group work.

Extension Ideas

  • Homework: Find and bring in examples of marketing strategies from daily life (e.g., adverts, flyers).
  • Create a class marketing board showcasing different types of marketing.
  • Invite a local business owner or marketing professional to speak or run a workshop for practical insights.
