Teaching Instructions

Cricket/Rounders: To be able to make accurately replicate a full range of fielding techniques in response to a competitive environment. To know why positional play may change/ vary depending on individual batters.

Overview

This 45-minute session focuses on refining year 9 students’ fielding techniques in cricket and rounders, while developing an understanding of strategic positional play based on individual batters. The lesson aligns explicitly with the National Curriculum for England (Key Stage 3: Years 7-9), emphasising skill acquisition, tactical awareness, and competitive application.

National Curriculum Links

  • Physical Education: Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9)

    • Develop competence in a broad range of physical activities (including striking and fielding games such as cricket and rounders).
    • Learn key skills and tactics, and apply them in competitive situations.
    • Understand how to adapt skills to suit different roles within a game situation.
    • Take part in competitive games, developing an understanding of tactics and composing strategies to outwit opponents.
(DfE: Physical Education Programmes of Study, 2013)
  • Progression Focused Learning Objectives

    • Use a range of throwing and catching techniques with accuracy.
    • Work as a team and communicate effectively to maintain or regain possession.
    • Adapt positioning on the field according to the strengths and weaknesses of individual opponents.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students will:

  1. Accurately demonstrate a full range of fielding techniques (e.g., catching, throwing, stopping the ball) under competitive pressure.
  2. Understand and explain how and why fielding positions may alter to counteract the playing style of individual batters.
  3. Apply strategic positional changes in small-sided game scenarios to improve fielding effectiveness.

Resources Needed

  • Cricket balls and equipment: bats, gloves, stumps.
  • Rounders balls and bats.
  • Cones to mark fielding positions.
  • Whistle and stopwatches.
  • Whiteboard and markers for tactical discussion.

Lesson Structure

1. Introduction and Warm-up (5 minutes)

  • Engage students in dynamic warm-up exercises focussing on agility and hand-eye coordination (e.g., ladder drills, reaction catches).
  • Briefly recap the importance of fielding skills in cricket and rounders. Highlight how accurate fielding impacts match outcomes.

2. Demonstration and Explanation (5 minutes)

  • Teacher demonstrates key fielding techniques:
    • Catching (high catches, slip catches, and close catches).
    • Throwing – overarm and underarm techniques with accuracy.
    • Stopping/saving the ball on the ground.
  • Discuss with students why fielders change positions based on batters. Use examples such as:
    • A strong leg-side hitter requires repositioning to the leg side.
    • A right or left-handed batter changes potential ball trajectories.

3. Skill Development Drills (15 minutes)

  • Station 1: Catching and Throwing Relay

    • Pairs practice catching and returning the ball with increasing accuracy and speed.
    • Introduce point scoring for clean catches and direct hits.
  • Station 2: Ground Fielding under Pressure

    • Students spread out simulating fielding positions.
    • Teacher or peer hits or rolls balls, and students must stop and throw accurately to a target within a time limit.
  • Station 3: Positional Awareness Drill

    • Use cones to mark various fielding positions on a small pitch.
    • Teacher simulates batters with specific hitting styles.
    • Groups reposition accordingly and explain their choices.

Rotate groups every 5 minutes to maximise participation.

4. Small-Sided Competitive Game (15 minutes)

  • Play a modified cricket or rounders game incorporating learned skills.
  • Set fielding positions with tactical adaptations to counter specific batters identified by teacher or students.
  • Encourage peer feedback on positional effectiveness and technique.
  • Teacher circulates to offer guidance and praise tactical decisions and skill execution.

5. Plenary and Assessment (5 minutes)

  • Recap learning objectives verbally, asking students to reflect on:
    • Which fielding techniques they improved.
    • How they decided to change positions and why.
  • Informal assessment: Teacher assesses technical accuracy and tactical understanding via observation and questioning.
  • Highlight next steps for personal improvement and encourage students to apply these ideas in upcoming games.

Differentiation and Inclusion

  • Pair students with differing skill levels to foster peer coaching.
  • Use visual and verbal explanations to cater for different learning styles.
  • Modify the chasing distance or ball speed for students requiring additional support.
  • Ensure all students engage physically and cognitively, adapting positioning for any mobility restrictions.

Assessment Criteria

  • Skill Execution: Student performs catching, throwing, and ground fielding techniques with consistency and accuracy across drills and games.
  • Tactical Understanding: Student articulates the reasoning behind positional adjustments relative to batter behaviours.
  • Competitive Application: Demonstrates appropriate adaptation of fielding roles and effective teamwork under game conditions.

Teacher’s Notes

  • Emphasise the critical link between skill mastery and tactical awareness.
  • Use questioning to deepen understanding, not only “what” but “why” to position oneself in certain ways.
  • Encourage a growth mindset: safe to try tactical changes and reflect on outcomes.
  • Use moments of success to build confidence and promote resilience through positive feedback.

This lesson encourages year 9 students not only to replicate accurate fielding techniques but also to think strategically, meeting high standards set by the National Curriculum through an innovative, interactive approach.
