Mastering Movement Skills
Lesson Overview
- Unit: Exploring Alternative Sports
- Lesson Number: 5 of 6
- Year Group: Year 10
- Subject: Physical Education (PE)
- Lesson Duration: 60 minutes
- Class Size: 30 students
- Lesson Title: Introduction to Parkour
- Curriculum Links:
- National Curriculum for Physical Education (KS4, England)
- Develop flexibility, strength, technique, control, and balance
- Take part in outdoor and adventurous activities that present intellectual and physical challenges
- Perform and evaluate skills to improve effectiveness in different physical activities
Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
- Understand the fundamental principles of Parkour, including safety precautions.
- Demonstrate basic Parkour movements, including jumps, rolls, and vaults.
- Develop agility, coordination, and confidence through obstacle-based challenges.
- Evaluate their performance and that of their peers, identifying strengths and areas for improvement.
Lesson Structure
1. Warm-Up (10 minutes)
Objective: Activate muscles, enhance mobility, and reduce injury risk.
-
Dynamic Stretching & Joint Mobility (5 mins)
- Arm swings, leg swings, hip rotations, wrist and ankle circles.
- Parkour-specific: Quadrupedal movement drills (bear crawl, crab walk).
-
Reaction & Coordination Drill (5 mins)
- ‘Follow the Leader’: Instructor moves through space with sudden changes in speed and direction; students mimic movements to improve agility and reaction time.
2. Introduction to Parkour & Safety (10 minutes)
Objective: Introduce foundational principles and safety awareness.
-
What is Parkour? (3 mins)
- Brief class discussion: origins of Parkour, philosophy (“be strong to be useful”).
- Emphasis on control, efficiency, and adaptability.
-
Safety Essentials (7 mins)
- Landings: Soft knees, rolling through impact.
- Spatial awareness: Reading environment, decision-making in movement.
- Risk minimisation: Knowing personal limits, importance of progression.
3. Skill Development (20 minutes)
Objective: Learn and practise fundamental Parkour movements.
-
Jumping & Landing (5 mins)
- Precision Jump: Jumping and landing accurately on a designated spot.
- Depth Jump: Dropping from a small height and landing safely with control.
-
Rolling Technique (5 mins)
- Forward shoulder roll (to disperse impact when landing from height).
- Drill: Small jumps into controlled roll landings on gym mats.
-
Basic Vaults (10 mins)
- Safety Vault: Beginner-friendly vault to navigate low obstacles.
- Speed Vault: Fast and efficient way to clear obstacles without losing momentum.
- Drill: Lanes set up with soft obstacles (gym blocks), students rotate stations.
4. Parkour Challenge Course (15 minutes)
Objective: Apply learned skills in a controlled, engaging course.
-
Course Layout:
- Section 1: Precision jumps between marked spots.
- Section 2: Vaulting over low barriers.
- Section 3: Rolling on soft surfaces.
- Section 4: Freestyle movement section for exploration.
-
Group Rotations:
- Students attempt course individually but work in teams for support.
- Partner feedback encouraged (what worked well, what could improve).
5. Cool-Down & Reflection (5 minutes)
Objective: Reduce heart rate, enhance flexibility, review learning.
-
Light jogging & static stretching (3 mins)
- Focus on hamstrings, quadriceps, hip flexors, shoulders.
-
Class Reflection (2 mins)
- What was the biggest challenge?
- What movement felt most natural?
- How might Parkour impact confidence in other sports?
Differentiation & Adaptations
🔹 For Less Confident Students:
- Assign peer mentors for support.
- Use lower obstacles for vaults.
- Alternative to vaulting: step-through technique.
🔹 For More Advanced Students:
- Challenge with combination movements (e.g., precision jump into vault).
- Encourage creative movement variations.
- Timed challenge mode for obstacle course.
Assessment Opportunities
✅ Formative Assessment: Ongoing teacher observation of technique, control, and confidence.
✅ Peer Feedback: Students provide constructive feedback on execution of movements.
✅ Self-Assessment: Students reflect on skill development, challenges, and progress.
Equipment Needed
- Gym mats
- Soft vaulting blocks
- Marker cones
- Timing devices (optional for challenge course)
Teacher Reflection Post-Lesson
🔹 Were students engaged and confident in their movement?
🔹 Did they demonstrate safety awareness?
🔹 How well did they support each other in peer assessment?
🔹 What adaptations may be needed for the final lesson in the unit?
Next Lesson Preview: Creative Parkour Sequences
- Students will design and perform their own Parkour sequences using learned skills.
- Increased focus on flow, adaptability, and creativity.
