Teaching Instructions

Last week i did a lesson on plural nouns (more than one). I focused on adding s, es, ves, ies. Only a few of the pupils grasped the concept while others found it more difficult and were confused. Could you create a recap lesson on this.

Overview

This 45-minute lesson is designed to recap plural nouns with a focus on the suffixes -s, -es, -ves, and -ies, reinforcing concepts introduced previously. It aligns with the Northern Ireland Curriculum for English at Key Stage 2 (Year 5). The lesson aims to build confidence and competence by incorporating interactive, multi-sensory activities to engage all learners and address different learning needs.

Curriculum References

Area of Learning: Language and Literacy
Level: Level 3 (Ages 8-11)
Specific Learning Outcomes:

  • Apply spelling, punctuation, and grammar knowledge accurately in writing

Skills and Capabilities:

  • Communication: Express themselves clearly and confidently
  • Using Mathematics and ICT: Recognise and manipulate patterns (in spelling)
  • Thinking Skills and Personal Capabilities: Reflect on own learning, problem solve, and apply knowledge

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, pupils will be able to:

  • Identify plural nouns formed by adding -s, -es, -ves, and -ies
  • Apply rules to form plurals correctly in spoken and written language
  • Correctly spell plural nouns with common irregular endings
  • Explain why some nouns change differently in plural form

Resources

  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Individual mini whiteboards and pens for pupils
  • Word cards with singular nouns
  • Sorting mats labelled -s, -es, -ves, and -ies
  • Interactive quiz slides (prepared via PowerPoint or equivalent)
  • ‘Plural Pronouncer’ game setup (see Activity 2)
  • Worksheets with mixed plural nouns for differentiated tasks

Lesson Structure

1. Introduction & Recap (10 minutes)

  • Starter Activity (5 min): Write four singular nouns on the board: cat, box, leaf, baby. Ask pupils in pairs: "What is the plural of each noun? How do we change the ending?"
  • Discuss briefly as a class focusing on the four suffix rules (-s, -es, -ves, -ies). Use clear examples and visual highlights on the whiteboard.
  • Elicit from pupils any difficulties faced last week to identify areas of confusion. Use a quick thumbs up/down to gauge confidence on each rule.

2. Interactive Sorting Challenge (10 minutes)

  • Distribute noun word cards to pairs or small groups. Each group has a sorting mat labelled with the four plural endings.
  • Pupil groups read their nouns aloud, decide which plural ending applies, and place their card on the correct mat. For example, church → churches, knife → knives, city → cities.
  • Teacher circulates to offer prompts and correct misunderstandings.
  • Quick plenary: Invite one group per category to explain their reasoning. This builds verbal articulation and reasoning skills.

3. ‘Plural Pronouncer’ Game (10 minutes)

  • Teacher plays ‘Plural Pronouncer’: pupils take turns selecting a card or teacher calling out a singular noun. The pupil must say and spell the plural form aloud.
  • Use mini whiteboards for pupils to write the plural form after saying it.
  • Peers check accuracy using a teacher-created answer chart.
  • Points awarded for successful spelling and justification of chosen suffix for friendly competition and motivation.

4. Differentiated Plural Noun Worksheet (10 minutes)

  • Pupils complete worksheets tailored to their ability levels:
    • Group 1: Basic plurals with -s / -es
    • Group 2: Including -ves and -ies plurals
    • Group 3: Challenge section with irregular plurals and error correction.
  • Teacher supports as needed, ensuring all pupils apply rules confidently.

5. Review and Reflect (5 minutes)

  • Use exit tickets: Each pupil writes down one plural noun they learned and the rule applied.
  • Share a few examples aloud to consolidate understanding.
  • Teacher gives immediate positive feedback and outlines next steps for continued practice.

Assessment and Feedback

  • Formative assessment through observation during sorting and game activities.
  • Assessment of worksheets to check for correct application of plural endings.
  • Exit ticket provides quick evidence of individual understanding.
  • Provide verbal feedback during activities and written feedback on worksheets to support learner progression.

Differentiation and Inclusion

  • Visual aids and sorting mats support pupils who need concrete examples.
  • Mixed-ability grouping encourages peer learning.
  • Scaffolded worksheets target individual levels of challenge.
  • Oral and written components cater to diverse learning styles, including EAL pupils.
  • Additional support for pupils with dyslexia or spelling difficulties by focusing on multisensory approaches, such as writing while saying suffix endings aloud.

Extension Ideas

  • Encourage pupils to write a short story or sentences using at least ten plural nouns applying the suffix rules learned.
  • Use interactive ICT resources or spelling games in future lessons for consolidation.

End of lesson: Pupils gain strengthened grasp of plural noun rules, increased spelling confidence, and enthusiasm for applying knowledge in reading and writing tasks in line with the Northern Ireland Curriculum.
