Teaching Instructions

I want the plan to focus on fielding tactics within rounders. The pupils should learn which bases they should cover and how to set themselves up when fielding

Mastering Rounders Fielding

Overview

This 45-minute physical education session is designed for a class of 18 Year 6 pupils (aged 10–11) focusing on fielding tactics in rounders. Pupils will learn which bases to cover, positioning strategies, and effective communication on the field. The lesson aligns with the National Curriculum for Physical Education (Key Stage 2) and embodies principles of personal development, teamwork, and tactical understanding.

Curriculum Links

  • National Curriculum for England: Physical Education Key Stage 2 (Years 5-6)

    • Develops tactical understanding in team games.
    • Understanding of roles and responsibilities in gameplay.
    • Applying simple tactics and strategies to outwit opponents.
  • Skills Development

    • Throwing and catching techniques.
    • Spatial awareness and positional play.
    • Communication and teamwork.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, pupils will:

  1. Identify and explain the roles of fielders at bases in rounders.
  2. Demonstrate correct positioning and movement for fielding at each base.
  3. Apply fielding tactics effectively in small game scenarios.
  4. Communicate effectively with teammates to cover bases and make plays.

Resources

  • Rounders bats and balls (6 sets)
  • Cones or markers for bases (4 bases per playing area)
  • Bibs or pinnies (2 different colours)
  • Whistle
  • Whiteboard and marker for diagramming positions

Lesson Structure

1. Introduction & Warm-up (7 minutes)

  • Activity: Dynamic warm-up (light jogging, side steps, arm circles).
  • Explain lesson objectives clearly.
  • Brief discussion: "Why is fielding important in rounders?" Pupils share ideas.
  • Use whiteboard to briefly diagram the rounders field and main bases.

2. Teaching Fielding Positions (10 minutes)

  • Demonstration: Teacher models key fielding positions:
    • Bowler (pitcher)
    • 1st base (to catch throws from batsman or fielders)
    • 2nd base (covers throws from 1st base or cuts off running players)
    • 3rd base (stops balls that pass batter, supports 2nd)
  • Explain responsibilities at each base.
  • Key tactical point: "Always be alert, ready to move quickly to cover the base."
  • Highlight communication words/signals to say when covering a base: e.g., "Mine," "Yours," "Back up."

3. Station Rotation Drills (15 minutes)

Divide pupils into 3 groups of 6. Each group rotates among stations every 5 minutes.

  • Station 1: Position Practice

    • Pupils practise getting into correct positions at each base.
    • Teacher calls out scenarios ("Batter hits to right-hand side," "Runner attempts to steal 2nd base") and pupils respond by moving to cover bases correctly.
  • Station 2: Catch & Throw Relay

    • Pupils practise quick throws between bases; emphasis on accuracy and calling for the ball.
    • Focus on communication: "No ball," "Catch," "Out."
  • Station 3: Small Fielding Game

    • 6 players organise themselves in fielding positions; 2 batters.
    • Game stops after each hit for feedback on positioning and communication.
    • Encourage pupils to shout their base coverages.

4. Modified Game Play (10 minutes)

  • Set up a mini rounders game with 9 fielders and 2 batters.
  • Rotate fielders every 2 minutes so everyone tries different bases.
  • Teacher acts as umpire and gives on-the-spot tactical advice.
  • Pupils encouraged to apply communication and field positioning learnt.

5. Cool Down & Reflection (3 minutes)

  • Light jogging and stretching.
  • Quick classroom circle discussion:
    • What did you learn about covering bases?
    • How did communication help make plays easier?
  • Note progress and set one goal for next lesson (e.g., “I will communicate more when in the field”).

Assessment for Learning

  • Ongoing formative assessment during drills – check positioning and movement accuracy.
  • Observe communication effectiveness during game play.
  • Use questioning to assess understanding of roles and tactics.
  • Peer feedback encouraged in rotation stations.

Differentiation

  • Support: Use more visual cues and physical guidance for pupils struggling to understand positions.
  • Challenge: Advanced pupils practice more complex tactics like cutting off runners or backing-up teammates optimally.
  • Group pupils strategically to balance skill levels for pairings in drills.

Additional Notes

  • Emphasise safe play - proper catching and throwing techniques to prevent injury.
  • Foster teamwork by praising good communication and collaborative positioning.
  • Consider video feedback next lesson using tablets for reflective learning and peer assessment.

This structured plan optimises learning through active participation, tactical thinking, and communication — building confident and capable rounders fielders by the end of Year 6.
