Key Stage 3 Physical Education Programme of Study

  • Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities.
  • Apply knowledge of tactics, strategies and compositional ideas to reduce opposition and improve performance.
  • Take the initiative, lead activity and focus on improving aspects of own and team performance.
  • Understand and implement the principles of attacking and defending.
  • Understand the importance of rules, safety and etiquette in physical activity and sport.

Specific Learning Objectives Addressed:

  • Use running, jumping, throwing and catching in isolation and in combination. (NC KS3)
  • Play competitive games, modified where appropriate, and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending. (NC KS3)
  • Develop communication skills and working with others in a team context. (NC KS3)

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, pupils will be able to:

  1. Apply batting, fielding, and running skills accurately in a game-like environment.
  2. Demonstrate effective teamwork and communication during play.
  3. Consistently follow and apply Rounders rules during mini games.
  4. Reflect on personal and team performance to identify areas for improvement.

Equipment & Resources

  • Rounders bats (1 per team)
  • Soft balls (1 per game)
  • Cones or markers for bases and boundaries
  • Scorecards and clipboards
  • Whistle and stopwatch
  • Bibs or coloured vests for team identification

Lesson Structure

1. Introduction & Briefing (5 minutes)

  • Welcome and set expectations emphasising fair play, teamwork, and safety.
  • Outline the learning objectives clearly.
  • Recap the key Rounders rules and fair play principles.
  • Divide 20 pupils into 4 teams of 5 to ensure high participation.

Teacher tip: Use a quick interactive Q&A or pop quiz on Rounders rules to check prior knowledge and engage pupils immediately.

2. Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Dynamic warm-up focusing on major muscle groups used in Rounders:
    • Jogging around pitch + high knees (1 minute)
    • Arm circles and wrist rotations (1 minute)
    • Side shuffles and quick sprints (2 minutes)
    • Catch and throw pairs drill (1 minute)

Note: Emphasise communication during catch and throw pairings to link to lesson focus.

3. Core Activity: Mini Rounders Games (20 minutes)

  • Station 1: Batting and Running

    • Each team rotates through batting innings.
    • Focus: Applying batting technique, quick decision-making running on bases.
    • Teacher and assistants provide immediate feedback on technique and rule application.
  • Station 2: Fielding and Communication

    • Teams field with focus on catching, throwing accurately, and calling for the ball.
    • Encourage players to shout for the ball to avoid collisions & promote teamwork.
  • Game Rules Adjustments:

    • Mini-games last 5 mins each (or until each side bats twice).
    • Emphasis on rotation so each pupil bats, fields, and runs several times.
    • Encourage teams to use tactical communication (“Cover second base!”, “I’ve got it!”).

Teacher role: Circulate between teams, prompt effective communication, reinforce rules, and encourage positive peer coaching.

4. Cool-Down & Reflection (5 minutes)

  • Slow walking and stretching focusing on arms, legs, and back muscles.
  • Group circle discussion:
    • What did you do well in your team?
    • How did communicating help your game?
    • Which skill do you want to improve before the final lesson?
  • Pupils complete a quick self-assessment checklist or ‘Traffic Light’ system (red = need help, amber = improving, green = confident) on their batting, fielding, running, and teamwork skills.

Assessment & Feedback

  • Formative assessment through teacher observation using a simple skills checklist:
    • Batting technique and timing
    • Fielding accuracy and communication
    • Running speed and decision-making on bases
    • Teamwork and cooperation
  • Peer feedback encouraged using positive, constructive comments at the end of mini games.
  • Self-assessment via traffic light system post-lesson to promote pupil autonomy and reflection.

Differentiation & Inclusion

  • Provide bats with larger grips or soft balls for pupils with coordination difficulties.
  • Adjust game rules (e.g., smaller pitch) for pupils requiring additional support.
  • Assign leadership roles (team captain, rules monitor) to pupils who excel in communication.
  • Encourage mixed-ability teams to maximise peer support and inclusion.

Extension Ideas

  • Introduce a challenge where teams plan and implement a simple tactic for batting order or field placement.
  • Encourage pupils to create a brief ‘team cheer’ to boost motivation and communication.
  • Use video clips from professional Rounders or similar bat-and-ball sports to inspire and analyse skills.

Final Notes for Teachers

  • This lesson balances skill application with social and emotional learning elements (teamwork, communication).
  • Prioritising mini-games ensures maximum engagement and real-game practice.
  • Strong teacher presence and targeted feedback can dramatically improve pupil confidence and competence for the final lesson’s competitive rounders game.
