Hot and cold activity where pupils practice giving instructions to each other and working as a team
Explain to the pupils that today we are focusing on fielding and the long barrier. Pupils are to split themselves into groups of 3. They are to have 1 ball in their group of 3. Choose one group to demo the activity. The pupils will be rolling the ball between them in a triangle. Which hand do we put the ball in? writing hand Which leg do we put forwards? Opposite leg Where does the other hand point? Where you want the ball to go Should we be standing or kneeing when rolling the ball? standing Watch out for the pupils who will want to knee down and pat the ball along the floor. Do we want to roll the ball hard and away from our group or too our group? Too our group. Pupils to do the activity for 5 – 10 mins checking that they are all in the right positions. Fielding: Question the pupils if we are standing up with our feet apart and we miss the ball with our hands where is the ball going to go? What could we do to stop the ball from rolling through our legs? Put them together – would this stop the ball? Is this a big area to stop the ball? What about if we turned our body and put our back knee on the floor is this a bigger area to stop the ball? Called long barrier for picture references. The whole class will use the same space. The pupils are to roll the ball into space and a member of their group needs to move to stop it. Make sure that the pupils are not rolling the ball in the opposite direction. The groups will move in and out of each other and need to make sure that they keep their heads up and make sure they are only looking at their group’s ball. Encourage the pupils to perform the long barrier on either side of their body.
