Teaching Instructions

Topic is music and AI. One of the lesson activity i have asked students to create their song using AI for a commerical and a film scene which the video has been silenced, they need to add music

  • Student to work in 6 groups, each will work on the same two videos
  • They are asked to choose any of the following (soundraw.io, suno, aivamusic, beatoven and songR
  • They will spend 15-20 minutes on this

After times up, teacher will play them in a row, including with the original soundtrack, groups have to guess which one is the original.

Help me think of a list of reflective questions and also questions to ask during the Q&A round where I ask them which one is by human and which is by AI

Music Meets AI

Lesson Overview

This lesson introduces Year 13 students to the intersection between music and artificial intelligence (AI), challenging them to think critically about the relationship between technology and creativity. Students will engage with AI tools to compose music, explore their uses in the entertainment industry, and reflect on the growing role of AI in music composition.

This ties into the UK Music A-level curriculum, specifically in the areas of Developing Creativity Through Music Technology and Exploring Musical Composition and Analysis in Context. Additionally, it supports skills in Critical Listening and Analysis in relation to technology.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the session, students will:

  • Understand the role AI plays in music composition for commercial and cinematic purposes.
  • Experiment and compose using AI tools to supplement visual content.
  • Develop listening and analytical skills to distinguish human from AI compositions.
  • Reflect on the ethical and creative implications of AI in the music industry.

Lesson Structure

Starter Activity: Setting the Scene (5 minutes)

  1. Class Discussion: Introduction to AI in Music

    • Quickly explain how AI-generated music is used today, e.g., in video games, films, and advertising.
    • Ask the class:
      • Have you come across music that felt “machine-made”?
      • Can machines replace human composers, or do they complement them?
  2. Show Example: AI in Action

    • Play a short clip from a commercial or film scene featuring AI-generated music (teacher provides example).
    • Ask: What do you think – was this made using AI or by a person? Why?
    • Generate curiosity by hinting they'll be creating their own pieces soon.

Main Activity: Creating Music Using AI (15-20 minutes)

  1. Group Work Setup

    • Divide the class into 6 groups (approx. 3-4 students each) and assign them the same two visual tasks:
      • Task 1: Create a background score for a commercial.
      • Task 2: Compose a dramatic cinematic score for a muted film scene.
    • Present the silent video clips; provide a brief description of their intent (e.g., light/comedic for the commercial, suspenseful for the film).
  2. Introduction to AI Tools

    • Provide a brief walkthrough of one AI tool you've trialled with the class: Soundraw.io, Suno, Aiva Music, Beatoven, or SongR.
    • Allow each group to choose one tool to work with based on their comfort and interest.
    • Groups must select outputs that align with the intended mood and narrative of the video.
  3. Hands-On Composition

    • Students experiment with generating music using their chosen AI tools, listening to and refining their chosen outputs.
    • Encourage them to note differences between how they would have approached the task manually versus how the AI creates the music.

Showcase & Collective Analysis (15 minutes)

  1. Play the Completed Videos

    • After 15-20 minutes, play the six new soundtracks plus the original human-composed soundtrack for both scenes.
    • For each scene, ask students to:
      • Guess which track is the original human-made score.
      • Rate each score’s alignment with the video’s mood/purpose.
  2. Discussion: Identifying Human vs AI

    • Reveal the correct answer (which was the original), and discuss:
      • What stood out about the human-composed score compared to the AI-generated ones?
      • Did any AI compositions feel "human"? What made them convincing?

Reflection & Q&A Session (10 minutes)

Reflective Questions:

These questions should spark critical thinking about the creative process and AI’s involvement in the music industry:

  1. How did using AI alter your approach to composing? Would you usually start composing this way?
  2. What creative decisions did you feel were “yours” versus “the AI’s”?
  3. Did working with AI feel collaborative, or did it feel like the AI took over? Why?
  4. Did the AI-generated music serve the visual purpose effectively? What was missing or surprising?
  5. Should AI complement human creativity, or can it independently produce impactful art?
  6. Do you believe the music industry's ethical boundaries might shift with the growing influence of AI?

Q&A Round (Identifying Human vs AI):

  • What made you think a particular track was human-made rather than AI?
  • Did you hear any patterns or repetitiveness in the AI music that helped you identify it as machine-made?
  • How did the emotional depth compare between the human-composed track and the AI versions?
  • Do you think AI can fully understand the artistic nuance of emotion in music, or is it just mimicking patterns?

Plenary: Closing Thoughts (5 minutes)

  1. Summary

    • Emphasise the importance of understanding both possibilities and limitations of AI in creative fields.
    • Reinforce the idea that while AI can enhance creativity, human input and emotion play an irreplaceable role.
  2. Class Suggestions

    • Ask students for their opinions:
      • Does AI excite you as an emerging creative partner, or does it pose challenges to originality?
    • Tie back to potential future projects where AI might assist them in A-level compositions or personal works.

Extension Opportunities

  1. Homework/Extension Task

    • Suggest students explore one of the AI tools further and create a standalone 1-minute composition for a given theme (e.g., “hope” or “chaos”).
    • Ask them to write a reflective paragraph comparing the experience to composing traditionally.
  2. Further Exploration

    • Explore how AI tools are used by professional composers (e.g., Hans Zimmer, who incorporates AI-based techniques).
    • Debate: Should AI be credited as a composer when music is created with its assistance?

Teacher Notes/Considerations:

  • Test the selected AI tools prior to the lesson to avoid technical issues.
  • Ensure students have access to individual devices (e.g., laptops/tablets) and headphones for the group work.
  • Be prepared to guide groups who may find the AI tools' workflows unintuitive.
  • Respect diverse opinions: not every student embraces technology in art immediately, so create space for constructive critique.

This will not only expand students’ technological skills but also encourage them to debate the philosophical and ethical boundaries of AI in artistic processes – an engaging and thought-provoking topic perfect for Year 13 learners.
