Teaching Instructions

In the previous lesson the pupils learnt about the different rooms in a house, create a lesson that follows on from this. The lesson should be fun and engaging

My Local Area

Lesson Information

  • Subject: Geography
  • Year Group: Year 1
  • Duration: 35 Minutes
  • Class Size: 24 Students
  • Curriculum Area: Key Stage 1 – Geography (Understanding Places & Spaces)

Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, pupils will:

  1. Identify key locations in their local area (e.g. homes, schools, shops).
  2. Understand the difference between private and public spaces.
  3. Describe familiar places using simple geographical language.
  4. Begin to create a simple map of their local surroundings.

Resources Needed

  • Large interactive map of the local area (printed or digital).
  • Picture flashcards of local landmarks (school, park, supermarket, library, etc.).
  • Mini whiteboards and markers.
  • Plain A4 paper & crayons.
  • Small toy figures (for role-playing).

Lesson Structure

1. Introduction – Recap & Starter Activity (5 minutes)

  • Teacher asks: "Can anyone remind me of the different rooms in a house?"
  • Take quick responses and show flashcards of rooms as a refresher.
  • Lead into today's topic: "Now that we know about the rooms in a house, let's think bigger! What places do we see outside our house?"

🎉 Engagement Hook: Show a large mystery box with picture flashcards inside. Shake it! Let students predict what might be inside. Pull out a few landmark images as clues for today’s lesson.

2. Main Activity – Exploring Our Local Area (15 minutes)

Activity 1: Where Do We Go? (7 minutes)

  • Show the interactive map of the local area.
  • Ask students to name places they recognise (park, school, shops, post office).
  • Use toy figures to place on certain locations as they describe what happens there ("We buy food at the supermarket!", "We play in the park!").
  • Introduce the idea of private vs. public places (e.g., a home is private, but a library is public).

Activity 2: My Local Map! (8 minutes)

  • Give students plain A4 paper and crayons.
  • Ask them to draw their own simple map of their journey to school, including key landmarks.
  • Support by prompting: “What do you pass on the way to school?”
  • Encourage pupils to use basic map symbols (a rectangle for a house, a circle for a shop, etc.).
  • Ask a few students to describe their map to the class.

3. Plenary – Bring Learning Together (10 minutes)

🎤 Show & Tell: A few students share their mini maps with the class.

🌍 Discussion: Ask:

  • "What was the most interesting place on your map?"
  • "Why do we need places like schools and parks?"

🎲 Game - ‘What’s Missing?’

  • Place five landmark flashcards on the board.
  • Students close their eyes while the teacher removes one card.
  • They guess which one is missing!

Differentiation & Support

🌟 For Lower Ability:

  • Provide partially completed maps for students to label.
  • Use picture prompts instead of written labels.

🚀 For Higher Ability:

  • Challenge them to add roads or signs to their maps.
  • Ask: “Can you think of a place we don’t have in our local area that you’d like?"

Assessment for Learning

✓ Pupils identify key locations in their local area.
✓ Pupils distinguish between private and public spaces.
✓ Pupils create and explain a simple map of their area.

Teacher Reflection

  • What went well?
  • Did students engage with the hands-on map-making activity?
  • How well did they grasp the concept of private vs. public places?
  • What will I adjust for the next lesson?

👏 End of Lesson Fun Idea: Give students a simple ‘Local Area Spotter Challenge’ to try at home – Can they find a post box, a lamppost, or a zebra crossing?

🎉 Next Lesson Sneak Peek: We’ll be ‘Going on a Local Walk!' Stay tuned!
