Teaching Instructions

I want to intorduce writing a care guide. The plan i have been given is based on the minotaur. the initial task is to complete the care guide for the minotaur but I don't like the idea. Instead, what can I do to make this initial lesson of introducing a care guide for the minotaur more fun and exciting. Their end goal will be writing a care guide for Cerberus the three headed dog that protects Hades

Overview

This 60-minute lesson introduces Year 3 students to writing a care guide through an engaging, hands-on, and imaginative approach. Instead of immediately writing a care guide for the Minotaur, the class will undertake an interactive, sensory exploration to design and understand the Minotaur’s needs, setting the foundation for their final care guide task for Cerberus. This approach develops descriptive writing, organisational skills, and knowledge of instructional texts, in line with the National Curriculum for England.

National Curriculum Links

  • English - Writing - Year 3

    • Pupils should be taught to:
      • Plan their writing by discussing and recording ideas (English Programme of Study)
      • Draft and write by organising paragraphs around a theme
      • Use headings and sub-headings to aid presentation
      • Use expanded noun phrases to describe and specify (e.g. 'the sharp, pointy horns')
      • Use imperative verbs for instructions (e.g. “Feed the Minotaur daily”)
      • Evaluate and edit by assessing the effectiveness of their own and others’ writing
      • Develop positive attitudes towards and stamina for writing by writing for different purposes
  • Spoken Language - Year 3

    • Listen and respond appropriately to adults and peers
    • Ask relevant questions to extend their understanding and knowledge
    • Participate in discussions, presentations, and performances

Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, pupils will be able to:

  • Describe the Minotaur’s appearance and habitat using expanded noun phrases.
  • Identify key needs and care elements necessary for a mythical creature based on imaginative and sensory input.
  • Begin to organise information logically using headings in preparation for a care guide.
  • Collaborate to share ideas speaking clearly and listening actively.
  • Demonstrate motivation and enjoyment of imaginative writing connected to mythical creatures.

Resources

  • Large visual image/poster of the Minotaur (colourful, myth-inspired art)
  • Real textures and objects related to imagined Minotaur habitat (e.g., faux fur, leaves, small stone pieces)
  • Large flip chart or whiteboard for recording ideas
  • ‘Care Guide’ template with headings (Name, Habitat, Diet, Special Care, Behaviour)
  • Colourful card and markers for note-taking and drawing
  • Mini role-play props (horns, cloak, ‘feeding’ accessories)
  • Clipboards and pencils

Lesson Outline

1. Warm-up: Mythical Creature Imagination (10 mins)

  • Begin with an enthusiastic story prompt: “Imagine you are visiting a secret forest where mythical creatures live, and you meet the Minotaur!”
  • Show the image of the Minotaur; ask open questions:
    • “What do you notice about the Minotaur?”
    • “What do you think it eats?”
    • “Where might it live?”
  • Use a recall game: pupils throw a soft ball to peers in a circle, sharing one descriptive word or phrase about the Minotaur (encourage expanded noun phrases).

2. Sensory Exploration and Group Brainstorm (15 mins)

  • Divide class into five groups; each group explores one aspect of the Minotaur’s care using sensory items and visual prompts:

    1. Habitat group – Use leaves, stones, and faux fur to imagine and describe the Minotaur’s home environment.
    2. Diet group – Look at images/textures representing food it might eat, discuss feeding.
    3. Behaviour group – Discuss how the Minotaur might act; role-play short behaviours using props.
    4. Special care group – Imagine what special care a mythical creature like this might need (e.g., horn cleaning, strong exercise).
    5. Safety group – Think about how to keep people and the Minotaur safe near each other.
  • Each group notes key ideas on colourful cards under the headings of the care guide template.

3. Regroup & Create Class Care Guide Draft (15 mins)

  • Gather as a whole class; group spokesperson shares their ideas on the flip chart under each heading.
  • Teacher models how to write descriptive sentences using expanded noun phrases and imperative verbs from the groups’ ideas, eg.
    • “Feed the Minotaur fresh fruit and crunchy roots every morning.”
    • “Keep the Minotaur’s home clean with dry leaves and soft hay.”
  • Together, draft a shared care guide paragraph for the Minotaur.

4. Independent Starter Task – Sketch & Note for Cerberus (15 mins)

  • Introduce Cerberus, the three-headed dog guarding Hades (brief story snippet for fascination).
  • Pupils sketch their own images of Cerberus and label notes about what they think it needs for care (diet, habitat, behaviour).
  • This initial note-taking will lay foundations for their next lesson writing a full care guide for Cerberus.

5. Plenary & Reflection (5 mins)

  • Recap learning objectives and ask:
    • “What was tricky or fun about imagining a care guide?”
    • “How does knowing about the Minotaur help when thinking about Cerberus?”
  • Praise creativity and collaborative work.
  • Highlight the importance of clear instructions and descriptions in care guides.

Differentiation Strategies

Learner TypeStrategy
EAL / Lower AttainingUse visual aids and sentence starters; pair with stronger peers; use simpler vocabulary prompts.
Physical/Sensory NeedsProvide tactile objects and large print materials; allow movement breaks; ensure seating for clear view of visuals.
Advanced LearnersChallenge to write two imperative instruction sentences independently; add similes or metaphors to descriptions; suggest alternative mythical creatures for extra care guides.

Extension Activities

  • Write a ‘Troubleshooting’ section at the end of the care guide that suggests what to do if Cerberus is unhappy or misbehaving.
  • Create a comic strip or storyboard showing a day in the life of Cerberus based on their care guide.
  • Research real animals with multiple heads or unusual traits and compare their care with Cerberus for a mini report.

Assessment

  • Formative: Observe participation during group discussions and sensory exploration. Evaluate use of descriptive language and understanding of care guide organisation on flip chart draft.
  • Summative (next lesson): Assess written care guide for Cerberus against a checklist of criteria: use of headings, clarity, expanded noun phrases, imperative verbs, relevance of instructions.

Notes for Teachers

  • Building imagination through sensory experience catches attention and makes abstract writing tasks more concrete.
  • Emphasising speaking and listening aligns with national spoken language goals while enriching writing skills.
  • Keeping mythical creatures as the theme helps spark creativity within a structured writing form.
  • Consider creating a classroom “Mythical Care Centre” display where pupils can pin their care guides and drawings for ongoing reference and motivation.

This lesson plan combines core Year 3 writing objectives with fun, hands-on activities designed to captivate and inspire young learners, fully aligned with the National Curriculum for England.
