  • Begin to develop a personal action plan to apply these skills effectively

Resources Needed

  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed worksheet (included below)
  • Sticky notes and pens
  • Large poster paper for group work
  • Timer or clock
  • ‘Reflection Journal’ booklet (simple lined paper booklet for personal notes)

Lesson Structure

1. Introduction (7 minutes)

Starter Activity:

  • Pose the question on the board: "What do you think will be different about learning at secondary school?"
  • Students write one idea on a sticky note and place it on the whiteboard wall.
  • Quick whole-class review: Teacher clusters sticky notes into themes (e.g., workload, subject variety, homework, independence).

2. Exploring Academic Changes (10 minutes)

Teacher Input:

  • Present 5 key academic changes using a visual presentation or whiteboard notes:
    1. Multiple teachers and subjects each lesson
    2. Increased homework and deadlines
    3. Greater independent learning expectations
    4. More formal assessment methods (tests, coursework)
    5. Development of organisational and time management skills
  • Use real examples or short testimonials from previous Year 7 students (or teacher experience).

3. Group Activity: Skills & Strategies Brainstorm (15 minutes)

  • Students split into 2 groups (3 and 4).
  • Each group receives a large poster paper headed “Skills to Succeed in Secondary School”.
  • Groups brainstorm practical skills (e.g., using a planner, asking for help, setting revision timetables) and strategies to tackle challenges.
  • Encourage use of keywords, drawings, or mind maps.
  • After 10 minutes, groups present their posters briefly (up to 2 mins each).
  • Teacher notes any overlaps or new ideas on the board.

4. Worksheet Completion – Personal Action Plan (15 minutes)

  • Students individually complete the provided worksheet, reflecting on:
    • Three academic changes they find most significant
    • Skills they feel confident about
    • Skills/strategies they want to improve or learn
    • One action they will take next term to help themselves
  • Teacher circulates and supports thinking, prompts reflective discussion where needed.

5. Plenary – Reflection & Goal Setting (3 minutes)

  • Students share one action from their personal plan with the class or to a partner.
  • Teacher reinforces importance of resilience, asking questions such as:
“How will you keep motivated if something feels hard?”
  • Add encouragement: “Change is normal, and you have the tools to manage it.”

Extension Tasks (Optional/ Homework)

  1. Transition Diary: Keep a diary for the first week of secondary school, noting challenges and successful strategies used.
  2. Organisational Planner Design: Create a personalised term planner that fits their style of learning and schedule.
  3. Peer Interview: Interview a Year 7 student or older sibling about how they adapted to secondary school academic demands.

Assessment and Feedback

  • Ongoing formative assessment through group discussions and worksheet reflections.
  • Verbal feedback during group presentations and individual work.
  • Use ‘Exit Ticket’: Before leaving, each student tells the teacher one new strategy they will try.
