Overview
This 45-minute lesson launches the unit Normans: Castles and Conquests for Year 5 students (ages 9-10). The focus is to develop pupils’ understanding of who the Normans were, where they originated, and place them into historical context using maps and timelines. Activities include map work, fact matching, and timeline construction. This lesson aligns closely with the National Curriculum for History for Key Stage 2.

History
- Pupils should be taught to:
- KS2: A study of an aspect or theme in British history that extends pupils’ chronological knowledge beyond 1066 (NC Ref: KS2-H4)
- Note: This unit introduces the Normans, an essential foundation for later study of the Norman Conquest in 1066.
- Chronological understanding:
- Develop secure chronological knowledge of the period studied (NC Ref: KS2-H2)
- Historical knowledge and interpretation:
- Use a range of sources to find out about the past (NC Ref: KS2-H3)
- Historical enquiry:
- Use dates and historical terms accurately (NC Ref: KS2-H5)
Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, pupils will:
- Locate Normandy and England on a map of Europe.
- Understand the origins of the Normans as Vikings who settled in Northern France.
- Match key facts about the Normans to deepen their knowledge.
- Place key Norman events in chronological order using a timeline.
Resources
- Large laminated map of Europe showing England, Normandy, and wider Europe
- Printed fact-matching worksheet (8 facts and matching images)
- Timeline activity sheets with key dates/events blanks to fill in
- Whiteboard & markers
- Sticky notes or cards for timeline activity
- Projector or interactive whiteboard (optional for map display)
Lesson Structure
1. Starter (5 minutes) – “Where in the World?”
- Display or hand out the map of Europe.
- Ask pupils: “Where do you think the Normans came from?”
- Invite pupils to place sticky notes or mark with a pen on the map where they think the Normans originated and compare with England’s location.
- Briefly introduce Normandy as part of northern France.
National Curriculum focus: Develop chronological understanding and locate countries in Europe (KS2-H2)
2. Teacher Input (10 minutes) – Origins of the Normans
- Explain that the Normans were originally Vikings from Scandinavia who settled in what became known as Normandy. Use clear timeline points: Viking invasions (9th-10th centuries), settlement in Normandy (911 AD).
- Show on the map the route Vikings took and where Normandy is situated.
- Highlight key vocabulary: Vikings, Normandy, settlers, invasion.
- Write key terms and dates on the whiteboard for reference.
Teacher ‘wow’ tip: Use a simple animated map clip or drawing to visually show Viking migration to Normandy.
National Curriculum focus: Use historical terms and understand chronology (KS2-H2, KS2-H5)
3. Main Activity (15 minutes) – Fact-Matching Worksheet
- Pupils complete a worksheet where they match Norman-related facts to pictures or short descriptions.
- Example facts: “The Normans were originally Vikings.” / “The Duke of Normandy invaded England in 1066.” / “Normandy lies in northern France.”
- Pupils work in pairs to encourage discussion and peer learning.
- Circulate to support understanding and prompt reasoning.
National Curriculum focus: Use range of sources to find out about the past (KS2-H3)
4. Timeline Activity (10 minutes) – Placing the Normans in Historical Context
- Explain the purpose of a timeline as a tool to understand historical order and context.
- Provide timeline sheets with spaces and key years related to Viking settlements, Norman rise, and the Norman Conquest (examples: 793 - Viking raids begin, 911 - Treaty of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte, 1066 - Battle of Hastings).
- Pupils place events on the timeline individually or in pairs.
- Discuss as a class once placements are complete to clarify any misconceptions.
National Curriculum focus: Secure chronological knowledge and understanding of events in sequence (KS2-H2)
5. Plenary (5 minutes) – Review and Reflect
- Use quick-fire questions to recap:
- “Where is Normandy?”
- “Who were the Normans before settling in France?”
- “Why do you think the Normans are important in British history?”
- Ask a few pupils to share one new fact they’ve learned today.
- Set a question to think about for next lesson: “What do you think Norman castles might tell us about their way of life?”
Assessment Opportunities
- Observe participation in map activity for location knowledge.
- Check fact-matching worksheets for accuracy and comprehension.
- Review timeline sheets for understanding of chronological sequencing.
- Questioning during plenary to assess retention and understanding.
Differentiation
- Support: Provide sentence starters or illustrated fact cards for pupils needing help with writing on worksheets and timelines.
- Challenge: Ask more able pupils to suggest reasons why the Vikings settled in Normandy and predict consequences for England.
Cross-Curricular Links
- Geography: Mapping and spatial awareness through locating countries and regions.
- Literacy: Use of historical vocabulary and sentence writing in worksheets.
Final Notes
This lesson sets a solid foundation for deeper exploration of Norman life, conquest, and architecture over subsequent lessons. Interactive map and timeline activities combined with group discussion actively engage pupils and develop core historical skills required by the National Curriculum.
Teachers are encouraged to personalise the lesson with visuals or digital mapping tools where available to boost engagement and cater to various learning styles.
