1. Introduction & Engage (0-7 mins)

  • Hook:
    "Imagine you’re a treasure hunter! You have a map with clues hidden at precise distances — some written as decimals. Today, we’ll help you find the treasure by ordering these decimal clues correctly."

  • Initial Question:
    Write these numbers on the board:
    0.3, 0.25, 0.27, 0.2

    Ask:

    • “Which number is the smallest? How do you know?”
    • “Which number is the biggest? Explain your reasoning using place value.”
  • Recall prior knowledge:

    • Remind them about place value and how tenths and hundredths work
    • Use a quick recall question: "What does the 5 mean in 0.05?"
