I want to plan a final lesson for a geography lesson that has been on the topic 'seaside'. We have looked at physical and human features of the seaside (introducing topic words such as pier and harbour) and compared it to our local rural area of Selside, Cumbria. We have looked at maps and map keys, created a map of an island after looking at the story 'Katie Morag' and used images to find locations on a map of Lyme Regis. For this final lesson I need to try and fit in looking at popular seaside destinations in the UK and also how to stay safe on a trip to the beach. The starter input can be a whole group input with either a story or a video or a short activity from the Project Zero website, followed by smaller group activities with 5 students (year 1 and year 2) that will then swap over. The main activities can last roughly 15-20 minutes. This will be followed by a ten minute brain break for the children to run around followed by another short activity that can either be whole group or in the two groups again. The afternoon starts at 1pm and finishes at 2.45 and the class is mixed ability.
Seaside Adventures
A 105-minute engaging geography lesson designed for Year 1 and Year 2 students (ages 5-7) combining whole-class and small-group learning to explore popular UK seaside destinations and important beach safety tips. This lesson culminates the seaside topic, linking prior learning on physical and human features to real-life locations, while weaving in Project Zero’s Thinking Routines to deepen understanding. Activities accommodate mixed abilities and SEN needs, following the National Curriculum (England) for Key Stage 1 Geography.
