Teaching Instructions

i want a lesson plan created for key stage 3 soccer, first focus is on passing and awareness and im looking to build this up throughout the lesson

Overview

This 45-minute lesson targets Year 10 students (ages 14-15) and focuses on developing passing and spatial awareness in soccer. The session is designed to progressively build technical skills and tactical thinking, aligning closely with the National Curriculum for Physical Education (Key Stage 3).

National Curriculum Links

  • Pupils should be taught to:
    • Use running, jumping, throwing and catching in isolation and in combination (NC PE Programmes of Study)
    • Play competitive games, modified where appropriate (NC PE Programmes of Study)
    • Apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending (NC PE Programmes of Study)
    • Develop and refine the techniques and tactics they use in different games (NC PE Programmes of Study)
    • Take part in competitive sports and activities (NC PE Programmes of Study)
    • Analyse their own and others’ performance and suggest ways to improve
  • Focus Areas:
    • Developing co-ordination and control of the ball while passing
    • Enhancing spatial awareness and movement off the ball
    • Building teamwork and communication

Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate accurate short and medium-range passing using correct technique.
  2. Show awareness of teammates’ positions and space when passing and moving.
  3. Understand and apply concepts of supporting play and movement off the ball.
  4. Reflect on individual and team performance to identify areas for improvement.

Equipment

  • Size 4 soccer balls (at least 10)
  • Cones to mark grids and goals
  • Pinnies (for team identification)
  • Whistle
  • Stopwatch or timer

Lesson Breakdown

1. Introduction & Warm-Up (8 minutes)

  • Activity: Dynamic warm-up incorporating ball work.
    • Jogging around the pitch with the ball, incorporating dribbling, toe taps, and step-overs to increase ball familiarity.
  • Progression: Add passing to a partner every 5 touches.
  • Teacher Cues: Emphasise controlled touches and awareness of partner’s position.
  • Curriculum link: Develops basic ball control and coordination (NC KS3).

2. Technical Passing Drill – Passing Accuracy Circuit (10 minutes)

  • Set-up: Create 4 stations around the pitch with different passing challenges (short passing, passing to moving targets, wall passes, and one-touch passing). Groups of 5 rotate every 2-3 minutes.
  • Focus:
    • Proper passing technique (inside foot, passing weight).
    • Head up to scan space before passing (promotes awareness).
  • Teacher Role: Give formative feedback, correct technique, ask questions about positioning and timing.
  • Assessment: Observe technique and awareness development.
  • Curriculum link: Refines passing and receiving skills fundamental to competitive games (NC KS3).

3. Small-Sided Game – 5v5 Possession Game with Passing Zones (15 minutes)

  • Set-up: Mark out a 40x30m pitch divided into 3 vertical zones. Teams of 5; two neutral players can roam all zones. Players are encouraged to make passes into the next zone, practicing spatial awareness and supporting movement.
  • Rules:
    • Encourage communication and scanning before passing.
    • Encourage movement after passing to create space.
    • Award points for successful passes into different zones without interception.
  • Teacher Role: Encourage players to verbalise their intentions and observe spatial utilisation. Pause the game to highlight good examples or offer improvement suggestions.
  • Curriculum link: Applies attacking and defending principles, focusing on movement, awareness, and teamwork (NC KS3).

4. Reflection and Cool Down (7 minutes)

  • Activity: Guided group discussion:
    • What did you notice about space and passing during the game?
    • How did moving off the ball help you keep possession?
    • Individually, what can you improve next time?
  • Cool Down: Light jogging and static stretching focusing on legs.
  • Curriculum link: Encourages analysis of performance and self-improvement (NC KS3).

Assessment Criteria

  • Correct technique demonstrated in at least 3 passing drills.
  • Evidence of scanning and awareness before passing (observed in small-sided game).
  • Ability to move into space and support teammates effectively.
  • Participation in reflection with thoughtful responses.

Differentiation

  • For less confident players: Reduced passing distance, use of larger goals or targets in drills.
  • For more advanced players: Encourage use of weaker foot, introduction of driven or lofted passes, and tactical decision-making discussions.

Teacher Notes

  • Use questioning to deepen thinking: “Why did you choose that pass?”, “Where could you be to help your teammate?”
  • Model scanning and communication yourself during drills.
  • Focus on positive reinforcement to build confidence.

This lesson ensures active engagement while strictly adhering to the National Curriculum, promoting both skill development and tactical understanding in KS3 soccer.
