Planning an English lesson on the book the day the war came. Last lesson we considered different peoples perspectives on the refugee eg fearful: they dont know where shes from or what shes capeables for or the might feel bad for her and want to help. I will start the lesson with jot thoughts of how we can help the girl.
We will them recap colons from last lesson. I will get the children to each write a sentence on their whiteboard from a positive perspective. They will then swap with their partners and add extra info after the colon onto their partners sentence.
They will them do this from a negative perspective.
Once they have done this explain the task: Write a diary from the point of view of one of the people in the street. Explore their mixed feelings. Write two paragraphs: one based on their fear of this new person and one where they have reconsidered and wish to help. Use present perfect tense. e.g. Dear Diary, Today a girl, who I haven’t seen before, walked up through the middle of our high street. She looked ragged, dirty and desolate. I looked away from her at first: I felt slightly anxious. Who was this girl? People didn’t smile at her: no one dared approach her. Now I’m feeling a little ashamed. Perhaps this little girl needed help? She did look a little lost. Maybe she would have liked a blanket or a coat to keep her warm and cosy. If I see her again tomorrow, I’m going to offer some help. I’ll ask her if she knows where she is going or if there is anything she needs. I want to make it right.
The children arent very imaginative or independant so help with ways to rlly prompt their thinking and rllu support their writing. Key things i need to discuss and aknowledge
