Overview
This 50-minute lesson is designed for Year 7 students (age 11-12) to develop and refine passing skills in a variety of physical education contexts, aligning precisely with the National Curriculum for England (2014). The lesson promotes competency in fundamental movement skills, tactical understanding, and encourages teamwork and communication.
Curriculum Links
- National Curriculum: Physical Education (Key Stage 3, Year 7)
- Pupils should be taught to:
- Use running, jumping, throwing, and catching in isolation and in combination.
- Play competitive games, modified where appropriate, and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending.
- Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities.
- Relevant Competencies:
- Mastery of basic techniques (e.g. passing, catching, controlling)
- Applying skills and tactics in game situations
- Communication and teamwork
Learning Objectives
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate accurate and controlled passing techniques using both hands and feet.
- Apply passing skills effectively in small team game scenarios.
- Communicate and collaborate with teammates to maintain possession in passing drills and games.
- Understand the importance of spatial awareness and timing in successful passing.
Lesson Structure
1. Introduction and Warm-Up (10 minutes)
Activity: Passing Circle Dynamic Warm-Up
- Students form groups of six in circles.
- Begin with gentle jogging and introduce a light hand pass (e.g., a chest pass or bounce pass with a lightweight ball like a netball or football).
- Progress to dynamic stretches, incorporating passing (e.g., leg swings during passes, arm circles).
- Emphasise:
- Proper grip/release
- Body positioning
- Eye contact with receiver
- Teacher demonstrates correct passing form focusing on accuracy and control.
Assessment: Brief observation to correct errors with passing technique and communication cues.
2. Skill Development Drills (20 minutes)
Drill 1: Partner Passing Precision (10 minutes)
- Students pair up, 3m apart, practising chest passes (hand) or instep passes (football).
- Focus: Accuracy, weight of pass, consistent technique.
- Increase distance gradually as competence grows.
- Variation:
- Use non-dominant hand/foot for passing.
- Pass while moving side-to-side to simulate match conditions.
Teacher’s Role: Offer targeted feedback on passing style, body alignment, and follow-through.
Drill 2: Moving Triangles Passing Drill (10 minutes)
- Groups of 3 form a triangle, continuously passing the ball around while one student moves to open space.
- The passer should aim to put the ball into the receiver’s space to promote forward play.
- After a cycle, rotate the rôles.
- Encourages spatial awareness, timing, and communication.
Safety Note: Ensure adequate spacing to avoid collisions.
3. Game Scenario: Possession Passing Challenge (15 minutes)
- Divide class into 5 teams of 5-6 players.
- Use a marked grid (20m x 20m).
- Objective: Maintain possession by completing at least 5 consecutive passes.
- Each team passes the ball amongst themselves while defenders attempt to intercept.
- If a team loses possession, the other team attacks.
- Rules to reinforce:
- Use both hands and feet for passing (depending on ball type).
- No running with the ball over more than 3 steps before passing.
- Teacher encourages tactical decision-making — timing passes, supporting angles.
Assessment: Teacher observes teamwork, technical skill execution, and strategic passing.
4. Cool Down and Reflection (5 minutes)
- Static stretches focusing on upper and lower body muscles.
- Circle discussion prompt: “What helped your passing improve today?” and “How does communication affect team success?”
- Encourage students to share peer feedback on passing and teamwork.
- Set a challenge: Reflect on how to improve passing outside of class.
Equipment Needed
- Netballs or footballs (enough for pairs/games)
- Cones to mark grids
- Whistles
- Stopwatch or timer
Differentiation and Inclusion
- Support: Provide visual and verbal cues, demonstrate adaptations for students with coordination difficulties.
- Challenge: Encourage skilled students to use weaker limb for passing or introduce time-limited passing drills.
- Ensure all students have an opportunity to participate fully, including adaptations for SEND where necessary, consistent with the Equality Act 2010.
Assessment and Feedback
- Continuous formative assessment during drills with immediate feedback.
- Peer observation encouraged in game scenario to foster constructive criticism.
- Final reflection consolidates learning and self-assessment.
Teacher Notes
- Emphasise a growth mindset: mistakes are opportunities to improve passing.
- Encourage positive and clear communication—voice and hand signals during passing.
- Use specific praise to highlight strong technical skills and tactical decisions.
- Maintain high energy and engagement with varied activities and challenges.
This lesson plan offers a comprehensive, interactive, and curriculum-aligned approach to mastering passing skills, tailored for enthusiastic Year 7 students. The integration of technical drills and game scenarios ensures holistic skill development and fosters a team sporting spirit.
