Precision in Volleyball

Overview

This 40-minute physical education lesson is designed for Year 11 students and focuses on improving volleyball skills. The lesson aligns with the UK Key Stage 4 National Curriculum for Physical Education, particularly the strand of developing advanced techniques to improve performance and utilise strategies. The session incorporates skill refinement, teamwork, and tactical aspects to make it engaging and age-appropriate. It also fosters personal development in areas such as decision-making and communication.

  1. Demonstrate improved proficiency in key volleyball techniques: serving, setting, and spiking.
  2. Understand the importance of teamwork and decision-making in dynamic volleyball scenarios.
  3. Apply tactical skills to small-sided gameplay.
  4. Reflect on their own and others' performance to identify key areas for future improvement.

Resources Needed

  • 1 volleyball per 3 students (total 9 balls).

Lesson Outline

Starter (5 minutes)

Dynamic Warm-Up with Volleyball-Specific Movements

  1. Begin with a fast-paced dynamic warm-up to tailor the body for volleyball. Include:

    • High knees and butt kicks (30 seconds each).
    • Dynamic lunges with overhead arm swings (2 sets of 6 per leg).
    • Side shuffle drills across the court to mimic lateral movement (2 lengths).

Main Activities (30 minutes)

Activity 1: Serving Under Control (8 minutes)

  • Objective: Improve accuracy and technique in overhand and underhand serves.
  1. Split students into pairs. Students alternate serving to one another across the net.

  2. Coach them on correct serving technique:

    • For overhand serves, focus on toss accuracy, striking with an open hand, and follow-through.
    • For underhand serves, keep a stable platform, controlled arm swing, and aim for a target zone.
  3. Add a competitive layer: Mark target zones on the opposite side of the court with cones (1 point if the serve hits a zone).

Teacher’s Tip: Encourage students to make small adjustments in their stance and power for greater control.

Activity 2: Setting & Ball Placement (10 minutes)

  • Objective: Practise accurate ball placement to facilitate team play.
  1. Arrange students into groups of 3. Their roles: a tosser, a setter, and a spiker.
  2. Tossers start by gently passing the ball to the setter, who must volley it accurately back to the spiker (working their position and hitting down trajectory training
