Safe, Kind, Responsible

Overview

Subject: PSHE
Key Stage: KS3 (Year 7–8)
Class Type: Special School – Small group (9 students)
Lesson Length: 50 minutes
Focus: PSHE Drop Down Day
Curriculum Area: PSHE Association Programme of Study (KS3) – Core Themes: Health and Wellbeing, Relationships, Living in the Wider World

Learning Objective (LO)

To be safe, be kind and be responsible

Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the session, students will:

  • Understand what it means to be safe, kind and responsible in multiple contexts.
  • Be able to identify safe behaviours at school and in the community.
  • Explore what kindness looks like through actions and words.
  • Practise making responsible decisions through scenario-based learning.

Structure & Rotation

To maximise engagement, the lesson will be broken into three rotating 15-minute activity stations, with a 5-minute introduction and 5-minute plenary wrap-up.

Each station is designed to be multi-sensory and active to meet the needs of SEND learners, with support materials for scaffolding as needed.

Station 1: “Safety Detective”

Curriculum Link:

Health and Wellbeing → Risks, safety and balanced lifestyle

Objective:

To recognise safe and unsafe scenarios and understand how to respond responsibly.

Resources:

  • Printed scenario cards (e.g. “You see someone throwing stones near the road.”)
  • Red/Green sorting hoop
  • Magnifying glasses (toy) for 'detective mode'

Activity:

  1. Students wear 'detective hats' (optional props).
  2. Each student selects a scenario card.
  3. They read or listen to the scenario and discuss with support staff/peers if it's SAFE or UNSAFE.
  4. Place the card in the red (unsafe) or green (safe) hoop.
  5. Debrief: What could we do if it’s unsafe? Who can we tell?

Differentiation:

  • Visual aids and prompt questions
  • Group support to read scenarios
  • Role play available for kinaesthetic learners

Station 2: “Acts of Kindness Tree”

Curriculum Link:

Relationships → Respectful relationships, friendships

Objective:

To reflect on what kindness looks, feels and sounds like.

Resources:

  • A large paper tree display
  • Pre-cut paper leaves
  • Markers/stickers/glue

Activity:

  1. Begin with a discussion: “What is kindness?”
  2. Students are given 3–5 paper leaves.
  3. On each leaf, they write or draw:
    • Kind words they can say
    • Kind actions they can do
  4. Stick leaves onto the “Acts of Kindness Tree”
  5. Reflect as a group: “What does our tree show about our class?”

Extension:

  • Whisper Circle: Each student picks one leaf and whispers a kind thing to the next person.

Differentiation:

  • Emojis and symbol support
  • Word banks available
  • Scribe support where needed

Station 3: “Responsibility Challenge Game”

Curriculum Link:

Living in the Wider World → Responsibilities, rights and duties

Objective:

To show decision-making and problem-solving through interactive play.

Resources:

  • Responsibility Spinner Wheel or Dice
  • Large printed ‘Responsibility Challenges’ (e.g. “You forgot your homework!”, “You see litter on the floor.”)
  • “Responsibility Cards”: Action cards with good choices

Activity:

  1. Students take turns spinning the wheel or rolling a dice to pick a scenario.
  2. They read the Responsibility Challenge.
  3. As a group, talk through:
    • What is happening?
    • What would a kind and responsible person do?
  4. Select one of the Action Cards to add to the ‘Good Decisions’ board.

Bonus Round:

Students create their own “Mini Challenge” to add to the spinner.

Differentiation:

  • Use visual dice with pictures
  • Group support for decision-making
  • Praise stickers/tokens for engagement

Introduction (5 minutes)

  • Warm welcome with soft music
  • Display LO clearly: “To be safe, be kind, be responsible”
  • Whole class circle: Ask each pupil “What does it mean to be kind/safe/responsible?” (Prompt with visuals)

Plenary Wrap-Up (5 minutes)

  • Come together as a whole group.
  • Recap key takeaways from each station with pupil volunteers.
  • Reflect using a “Show Me” quiz:
    • Thumbs up/down: “Is this kind?” “Is this safe?”
  • Give each student a ‘Be Badge’ (mini sticker or badge with either Safe/Kind/Responsible)
  • Close with a fun chant together:
“Be safe, be kind, take your time – Be responsible and you’ll shine!”

Assessment for Learning

  • Observational notes at each station
  • Responses to scenario questions
  • Quality and appropriateness of ideas shared during plenary
  • Kindness leaves – can be added to a PSHE display to track progress over time.

Resources Needed

  • Scenario cards and sorting hoops
  • Paper tree, leaves, arts materials
  • Spinner/dice and responsibility cards
  • Visual symbols, emotion cards and prompt cards
  • Badge stickers or certificates

Additional Extension Ideas

  • Invite a local community officer to talk about safety in the community
  • Create a classroom “Kindness Box” for ongoing shout-outs and affirmations
  • Make a digital version of the “Acts of Kindness Tree” using classroom ICT

Notes for TA/Support Staff

  • Be ready to offer 1:1 support with reading and writing
  • Use emotion fans or signal cards for students who may need regulation breaks
  • Reinforce positive behaviours with immediate praise and reward tokens

Final Thoughts

This dynamic drop-down session fully supports the PSHE KS3 outcomes through practical, engaging, and differentiated activities tailored to a small group in a special school setting. Each rotation invites movement, creative thinking and empathy development in an inclusive environment.

Let’s empower these young people to be safe, be kind and be responsible — in school and beyond.
