Lesson Breakdown
1. Starter (5 minutes)
Objective: Activate prior knowledge and introduce the theme.
- Begin with an open question in English: "What are some important facilities in your school? Can you name some school rules?"
- Write answers on the board to visually map the student’s existing vocabulary.
- Introduce the lesson theme: “Exploring School Facilities and Rules.”
- Quick quiz: Show flashcards/images of school places; ask the student to name them in the target language or guess their meanings.
2. Vocabulary Introduction (10 minutes)
Objective: Learn and practice vocabulary related to school facilities and rules.
- Present a list of 10 key vocabulary items (e.g. library, gym, rules, no phones, uniform) with images and pronunciation. Use a mix of audio and visual aids.
- Use repetition drills and encourage the student to create their own sentences with each word.
- Explore gender and number agreements as appropriate.
- Introduce common present tense verbs linked to the facilities (e.g. “study in the library,” “eat in the canteen,” “follow the rules”).
3. Present Tense Practice (10 minutes)
Objective: Use the present tense to describe the school environment in simple sentences.
- Model sentences describing school facilities and rules using present tense verbs.
- Provide scaffolding: sentence starters such as:
- “In my school, we…”
- “The library is…”
- “Students must…”
- Engage in oral practice: student formulates at least 5 sentences describing their school using the vocabulary.
- Correct pronunciation and grammar gently; encourage self-correction.
4. Reading Comprehension & Discussion (10 minutes)
Objective: Read a short text about school rules from a target language perspective and discuss.
- Provide a short reading passage (50-70 words) describing a day at school in a francophone or target language country, highlighting facilities and rules.
- Student reads aloud (if comfortable), then answers comprehension questions orally.
- Discuss similarities/differences between their school and the one described.
- Encourage use of target language phrases when expressing opinions about rules.
5. Speaking & Reflection Task (10 minutes)
Objective: Consolidate learning and develop speaking fluency with a reflective prompt.
- Role-play: The student acts as a tour guide describing their school to a visitor in the target language, mentioning facilities and explaining key rules.
- Prompt questions:
- “What is your favourite place in school and why?”
- “Why do you think rules like no phones or uniform are important?”
- Encourage the student to answer in the present tense and use new vocabulary.
- Provide feedback on fluency and accuracy.
6. Plenary and Assessment (5 minutes)
Objective: Assess understanding and summarise learning.
- Quick oral quiz: Teacher says a facility or a rule in English; student responds with the target language word/phrase.
- Ask the student to orally summarise in two or three sentences what they learned about school facilities and rules.
- Highlight progress and set a simple ‘challenge’ for next lesson, e.g., try to notice or ask about school rules in another language context at home or online.
Differentiation & Support
- Provide visuals and sentence frames to support language production.
- Adjust pace sensitively given the 1:1 setting to avoid overload.
- Challenge with extended phrases or cultural notes if mastery is quick.
Assessment Criteria
- Oral use of vocabulary and present tense sentences with reasonable accuracy.
- Ability to comprehend written text and answer related questions.
- Engagement in discussion showing cultural awareness.
- Accurate pronunciation and grammar in basic sentences.
Teacher Reflection Post-Lesson
