Teaching Instructions

I want to plan a lesson on the seven continents. My class like a range of different activity in the lesson.

Seven Continents Exploration

Overview

This 60-minute lesson introduces Year 3 students (ages 7-8) to the seven continents of the world, aligning with the UK National Curriculum for Geography (Key Stage 2: Locational Knowledge) which expects pupils to identify the position and significance of continents and countries worldwide. The lesson incorporates varied engaging activities designed to meet diverse learning styles and encourage curiosity, collaboration, and reflection.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, pupils will be able to:

  • Name and locate the seven continents on a world map
  • Understand basic geographical differences between continents (size, climate, wildlife)
  • Develop map-reading skills through interactive tasks
  • Collaborate to create representations of continents
  • Reflect on global diversity and their place in the world

Curriculum Links

  • National Curriculum – Geography, Key Stage 2

    • Pupils should locational knowledge of the world’s countries, continents and oceans.
    • Use world maps, atlases and globes to identify the continents and major countries.
  • UK Educational Approaches

    • Emphasis on developing geographical vocabulary and enquiry skills
    • Multi-sensory and kinaesthetic activities to support different learning needs (per Ofsted recommendations)
    • Collaborative learning encourages social and communication skills development

Resources Required

  • Large world map or wall globe
  • Printed continent name cards (one set per table group)
  • Blank A3 sheets, coloured pencils, scissors, glue
  • Laptops/tablets with simple interactive map apps (optional)
  • A bag filled with object/picture clues related to each continent (e.g. toy animals, landmark images)
  • Worldcontinent Song lyrics printout
  • Sticky notes and whiteboard/flipchart for reflection

Lesson Structure

1. Starter (10 mins): Continent Song & Quick Recap

  • Play a catchy, repetitive Seven Continents song (teacher sings or plays audio) to introduce the names rhythmically.
  • Use a large world map/globe to point out each continent while singing.
  • Quick Q&A: "Can you name a continent?" "What do you notice about Australia?" etc.

2. Main Activity 1 (15 mins): Interactive ‘Continent Clues’ Sorting

  • Pupils work in groups of 4-5. Give each group a bag of objects/pictures representing different continents.
  • Task: Sort objects into piles representing each continent and stick the correct continent name card on their table.
  • Teacher circulates, asking guiding questions and helping with hints.

3. Main Activity 2 (15 mins): Creative Continent Collage

  • Each group receives a large blank A3 sheet and art supplies.
  • Task: Using the continent’s shape printed on paper templates, colour and decorate it with features from the objects/clues sorted before.
  • Groups present their collages briefly, saying one fact about their continent.

4. Consolidation (15 mins): Map Challenge & Reflection

  • Use an interactive map app or a printed blank world map worksheet for pupils to label continents from memory.
  • Pair pupils to quiz each other on continent names and locations.
  • End with a reflection activity on the whiteboard: Pupils write one new thing they learned on sticky notes and add them under “What I learned today” section.

5. Plenary (5 mins): Quickfire Quiz & Goal Setting

  • Teacher runs a rapid-fire quiz naming continents; pupils shout or signal answers.
  • Pupils set a simple goal for the next geography lesson (e.g. “I will learn a country in Africa”).

Differentiation & Inclusion

  • Provide continent name cards with pictures for learners who benefit from visual support.
  • Simplify map labelling task for lower ability pupils (matching shapes rather than free write).
  • Encourage confident pupils to help peers during group tasks.
  • Use kinaesthetic materials (objects, glue, colouring) to support kinaesthetic learners.

Assessment Opportunities

  • Observe group discussions and presentations for understanding.
  • Review annotated maps from Consolidation activity.
  • Listen to pupils use correct continent names and facts during quiz and peer questioning.
  • Reflective sticky notes provide insight into individual pupil learning.

Extension & Homework Ideas

  • Create a “continent passport” booklet with simple facts and drawings for each continent.
  • Research and bring in an object or image from a chosen continent to share next lesson.
  • Compose their own verses to the continents song to personalise learning.

Teacher’s Notes

  • Ensure classroom layout supports easy group work with space for creative tasks.
  • Time activities carefully; keep energy up with upbeat transitions.
  • Use positive reinforcement to encourage participation and curiosity.

This lesson plan embraces multi-modal learning, cross-curricular creativity, and enquiry-based approaches embedded in the UK curriculum framework, sure to “wow” the class and provide memorable, meaningful Geography learning.
