I'm teaching a Year 10 GCSE PE theory lesson about the skeletal system. The Do Now Activity will involve students naming as many bones of the body on the diagram as possible, with the extension task for the Do Now Activity asking students to describe the different functions of the skeleton. I'll then use the PowerPoint presentation to introduce the two learning objectives which are to to name eight different types of joint movements and apply them to physical activity, and to understand four joint types and the range of movements they allow. I'll then use the PowerPoint to tell the students the information they need to know - movement possibilities at a joint, classification of joints, sporting example. I'll then show a video explaining this further and the main part of the lesson will involve group work. In groups of four, each student assigns themselves two types of joint movement to focus on. Using the A3 information sheet, each student makes notes in their exercise book about their two types of joint movement. The following needs to be covered: The name of the joint movement and its definition, what joint types allow for this range of movement?, where on the body is this possible?, sporting example. Without looking at notes, each student then takes turns to teach the rest of the group. The rest of the group listens first before making notes. By the end of the task, each student in the group should have all eight joint movements written up into their exercise book. Some groups will be chosen to present in front of the class. The end of the lesson will involve a quickfire quiz, with students using their whiteboards to write the answers to eight questions.
The lesson plans needs to follow the following structure under these headings: Learning Objectives, how this link to prior/future learning?, introduction, development, conclusion, how students will be assessed, how some students will be challenged, how some students will be supported.
Prior Learning:
Future Learning:
Do Now Activity (5 minutes)
Teacher Explanation (10 minutes)
Group Work Task (20 minutes)
Students grouped into teams of four. Each student covers two of the eight joint movement types.
A3 information sheets provided, including definitions, joint examples, and sporting movements.
Individually, students research and make notes in exercise books on:
Peer Teaching Activity (10 minutes)
Class Presentations (10 minutes)
Quick-Fire Quiz (10 minutes)
Plenary Discussion (5 minutes)
This lesson plan aligns with the OCR and AQA GCSE PE Specification, specifically covering the skeletal system and movement analysis. By integrating active learning, peer collaboration, and varied teaching strategies, this ensures engagement and deep understanding of joint types and movement possibilities in sports performance.
