  • Tennis or junior cricket balls
  • Stumps (wickets)
  • Cones to mark stations
  • Score sheets or reflection journals
  • Whistles
  • Stopwatch or timer

Lesson Structure

1. Introduction & Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Welcome students and briefly recap skills covered in the unit: batting, bowling, fielding.
  • Quick dynamic warm-up focusing on mobility and coordination (e.g., jogging, arm swings, side shuffles).
  • Set positive tone: emphasise that today’s focus is on reflecting and refining; mistakes are learning opportunities.

2. Skill Stations Rotation (30 minutes)

Divide the class into 3 groups of 3 students each, rotating every 10 minutes.

StationFocus AreaDescription & Challenges
Batting RefinementBatting technique and shot selectionUse tennis balls; students practice front foot drives, pull shots, and defensive blocks. Encourage use of eye tracking and consistent stance. Teacher provides individual feedback and challenges players to hit specific targets for accuracy.
Bowling AccuracyLine and length controlStudents bowl at stumps using underarm and overarm techniques. Mark out a target area with cones to encourage precision. Use peer feedback and video clip playback (if possible) for technique review.
Fielding & ThrowingCatching, ground fielding, throwingPractice catching at different heights and ground fielding followed by accurate throws at the stumps or a target cone. Introduce timed challenges where a partner hits the ball for quick pick-up. Emphasise communication between fielders.

Teacher Role:

  • Rotate with groups, offer personalised coaching and encouragement.
  • Use quick skill assessments to note progress and provide targeted feedback.
  • Encourage pupils to note performance improvements or challenges in their reflection sheets.

3. Group Reflection & Discussion (8 minutes)

  • Bring all students together in a circle.
  • Facilitate a structured discussion using open questions:
    • What skill have you improved the most?
    • What part of cricket do you find most challenging?
    • How did the feedback help you today?
    • How can you use what you’ve learned in a game situation?
  • Encourage use of "I" statements to promote ownership of learning (e.g., "I found...," "I need to work on...").
  • Discuss the importance of ongoing practice and being a supportive team player.

4. Cool Down & Summary (2 minutes)

  • Guided stretching focusing on arms, legs, and shoulders.
  • Summarise key takeaways from the lesson and the unit.
  • Celebrate effort, progress, and teamwork with verbal praise.
  • Inform students about opportunities to play cricket outside school or join local clubs.

Assessment & Feedback

  • Formative assessment through observation during stations (technical skill display, engagement, application of feedback).
  • Self-assessment via reflection sheets capturing students’ own views of progress and areas for development.
  • Peer feedback during skill stations and discussion to support social learning.
  • Teacher notes on individual progress for end-of-unit reporting.

Differentiation & Inclusion

  • Adjust equipment size/weight as needed for differing physical abilities.
  • Provide extra coaching or simplified tasks for less confident players (e.g., closer stumps or underarm bowling).
  • Challenge more advanced pupils with additional accuracy or power targets.
  • Emphasise inclusion, respect, and positive encouragement throughout.

Extension Ideas for Teachers

  • Use slow-motion video recording on mobile devices to allow pupils to visually analyse their techniques.
  • Create personalised goal cards for pupils to take home outlining specific skills to practise.
  • Organise a friendly mini-tournament or inter-group matches in future sessions to apply skills under simulated match conditions.

Final Notes

This lesson concludes the unit with a focus on consolidating learning, enhancing critical reflection skills, and empowering pupils to take ownership of their cricket development. It’s designed to celebrate progress in a supportive, engaging, and inclusive environment, aligning closely with UK PE curriculum aims for comprehensive skill and personal development.
