Lesson Plan (50 Minutes)
1. Warm-up Conversation - 7 minutes
Aim: Activate prior knowledge, boost confidence, and connect to learner interests.
- Start with a casual conversation linking finance and sports (e.g., “Tedy, can you tell me about a recent match or sport event you enjoyed? How do you think finance plays a role in sports teams and organisations?”)
- Use open questions to encourage extended responses.
- Gently prompt use of accounting-related terms where possible (e.g., budget, revenue, expenses).
Curriculum focus: Builds skills in LIT 3-19a — engaging confidently in conversations related to real-world contexts.
2. Fluency-Focused Speaking Task - 10 minutes
Aim: Encourage smooth, spontaneous speech without grammar-heavy correction.
- Introduce Tedy to a simple, relevant prompt: “Describe a typical financial report you might prepare or explain to your manager.”
- Use a 2-minute uninterrupted speaking window.
- Encourage Tedy to keep talking, avoiding hesitations, using filler phrases naturally (e.g., “Let me see,” “Basically,” “What I mean is…”).
- Teacher listens actively; minimal intervention except gentle prompts if stuck.
Curriculum focus: Develops fluency in professional contexts (LIT 3-20a).
3. Pronunciation Focus - 10 minutes
Aim: Target and practice specific English sounds problematic for Spanish speakers.
- Sounds to focus on:
- /v/ vs /b/ (e.g., 'value' vs 'balance')
- /θ/ sound (‘th’ in 'with', 'both')
- /ʃ/ sound (sh in 'cash', 'sheets')
- Use audio modelling and choral repetition.
- Practice with accounting-related vocabulary and phrases.
- Include minimal pairs practice (e.g., “vat” vs “bat,” “thin” vs “tin”).
- Encourage Tedy to self-record and playback pronunciation to build self-monitoring skills.
Curriculum focus: Supports LIT 3-22a competence in pronunciation and spelling strategies.
4. Realistic Role-Play - 18 minutes
Aim: Simulate a professional scenario to practice fluency, pronunciation, and vocabulary under pressure.
Scenario: Tedy is an accountant presenting a monthly financial update to a manager or interviewing for an accounting position.
- Teacher acts as manager/interviewer.
- Provide a brief outline and key phrases on screen (e.g., “Our revenue this month has increased by...”, “I’d like to highlight…”).
- Tedy practises presenting financial facts, responding to typical questions (e.g., “Can you explain the variance?” or “How would you improve the budget process?”).
- Encourage natural pauses, clear articulation, and use of professional vocabulary.
Curriculum focus: Applies learning in TCH 3-02a and LIT 3-20a real workplace communication settings.
5. Useful Phrases and Wrap-up Feedback - 5 minutes
Aim: Provide Tedy with practical expressions for professional communication and reflective feedback.
- Present a short list of essential useful phrases for accounting discussions and interviews (e.g., “According to the latest figures…”, “In terms of cost control…”).
- Elicit Tedy’s favourite or easiest phrase to use from the list and discuss ways to remember them.
- Provide constructive feedback:
- Strengths (e.g., good use of professional terms, improving fluency)
- Next steps (practising ‘th’ sound more, building confidence in longer answers)
- Invite Tedy to set a personal speaking goal for next lesson.
Curriculum focus: Encourages self-evaluation, metacognition, and vocabulary development (LIT 3-19a, LIT 3-22a).
Assessment and Feedback
- Formative assessment through observation during fluency task and role play.
- Pronunciation evaluated with repetition and role-play segments noting sound accuracy improvement potential.
- Self-assessment by Tedy reflecting on confidence levels and phrase familiarity.
- Feedback aims to be motivating and focuses on career-relevant skills.
Differentiation and Adaptations
- Where hesitation is significant, provide sentence stems or prompts to support fluency.
- Use visual aids for vocabulary to reinforce learning.
- Allow Tedy to record role-play for self-review and asynchronous feedback or peer sharing if desired.
- Focus on real-world usage to maintain motivation and relevance.
Teacher Reflection (Post-Lesson)
- Were the specific Spanish-speaker pronunciation challenges adequately addressed?
- Did Tedy engage well in role play and demonstrate improved fluency?
- How effectively did the professional vocabulary embed into spoken English?
- Plan follow-up sessions to deepen vocabulary and introduce writing/reporting skills linked to accounting.
This session strategically integrates spoken fluency, pronunciation precision, and vocabulary application, rooted in CfE standards, designed to maximise Tedy’s professional English skills for her career ambitions.
