For this geography lesson we are going for a short walk but to our local church (up two lanes and across a meadow). There is myself, a TA and a parent helper with 15 children aged 3-7. Their aim is to spot physical and human features in our local environment and they will have clipboards and tick sheets (examples attached). The walk will probably take 30 minutes (there and back) with us stopping along the way to spot the features. Can you make any suggestions on the worksheets (how to differentiate them for different age groups/abilities) and also come up with an extension/reflection we can do when we return to school. The lesson lasts from 1pm-2.45pm and we will set of for the walk at 1.30. We will need to factor in a short opening activity ('think, pair, share') and then getting ready to go (toileting etc). I would also like an extension task for those who finish the reflection quickly as well as question prompts for us on the walk to help with the learning. The learning objective is 'I can spot human and physical features in my local area' for KS1 and 'I can talk about what is around me' for the EYFS.
| Year Group | Learning Objective (I can…) |
|---|---|
| EYFS | Talk about what is around me in my local area, recognising some features. |
| KS1 | Spot and identify human and physical features in my local environment. |
EYFS:
KS1 Geography (Years 1 & 2):
| Group | Worksheet Design & Differentiation |
|---|---|
| Nursery (3-4) | “What I see” picture-based sheet: Simple images of common features (tree, gate, building, flowers, animals). Children tick or place stickers when they see those items. Mostly pictures, minimal writing. Focus on talking about what they see. |
| Reception (4-5) | Basic tick sheet: Pictures of features divided into 2 columns (Physical / Human). Children tick or colour circles. Some label writing for able children (word bank with simple words: tree, church, gate, path). |
| Year 1 & 2 | Detailed tick sheets: List of features with small pictures, divided into Human / Physical. Children tick or write words where appropriate. Extra space to write a simple sentence about one feature they noticed. |
