Strength and Conditioning Fun

Overview

This 40-minute physical education session is designed for a class of 19 low ability students aged 10-11 years (Year 6), focusing on developing foundational strength and conditioning skills. Activities are crafted to be fun, inclusive, and accessible, promoting physical development, personal confidence, and teamwork in line with the National Curriculum for England (2014) - Physical Education Programme of Study for Key Stage 2.

Key Stage 2 - Physical Education (Years 5 & 6)

  • Pupils should be taught to:
    • Use running, jumping, throwing, and catching in isolation and in combination.
    • Play competitive games, modified where appropriate.
    • Develop flexibility, strength, technique, control, and balance.
    • Compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the session, pupils will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate basic strength and conditioning exercises with correct technique and control.
  2. Collaborate with peers to complete circuit challenges, enhancing teamwork and communication.
  3. Recognise the importance of strength and fitness for overall health and sport performance.
  4. Reflect on their own effort and identify areas of personal improvement.

Equipment

  • Cones (16)
  • Resistance bands (8 light resistance)
  • Soft medicine balls (2 kg) or alternative weighted balls (6)
  • Stopwatch or timer
  • Mats (8)
  • Jump ropes (8)

Lesson Structure

1. Introduction and Warm-Up (7 minutes)

  • Activity: “Dynamic Animal Movements”
    • Pupils mimic animal movements such as frog jumps, crab walks, and bear crawls around the hall/gym.
    • Aim: Increase heart rate and warm-up muscles dynamically.
  • Teacher Tips: Demonstrate each movement, emphasise smooth transitions and encourage fun expression.

2. Strength and Conditioning Circuit (25 minutes)

  • Set up 8 stations with pairs of pupils rotating every 3 minutes. Each station focuses on a key strength or conditioning element with low impact and adaptable intensity:
StationExerciseDescriptionPE Focus/SkillAdaptations
1Wall SitPupils lean against a wall in a seated “chair” position for up to 30 secondsStatic strength, lower body enduranceSit on chair behind for support if needed
2Medicine Ball PassPass the ball chest-height between partners, focusing on controlUpper body strength, coordinationUse lighter balls
3Resistance Band RowsUsing light resistance bands, partner holds band while the other pullsUpper back and arm strength, teamworkAdjust tension for ability
4Jump RopeContinuous jumps or step hops with the ropeCardiovascular fitness, coordinationStep-hop option for low impact
5Crab Walk RelayPupils travel crab walking between cones in team relay formatCore strength, enduranceSlow pace encouraged
6Plank HoldPupils hold a front plank position on mats for timed intervalsCore stability and strengthDrop to knees for support
7Step UpsStep onto a low box or step and back down repeatedlyLeg strength and balanceLower step height or slower pace
8Sit-up ChallengePupils attempt as many controlled sit-ups in 30 secondsAbdominal strength and controlModified crunches
  • Teacher Role: Circulate, provide positive reinforcement, cue correct technique, and assist with adaptations.

3. Cool Down and Reflection (8 minutes)

  • Cool Down: Guided stretching focusing on major muscle groups worked (quadriceps, hamstrings, arms, back). Stretching done in a calm, controlled manner.
  • Reflection Chat: Sit in a circle and discuss:
    • What exercises did they enjoy?
    • What part was challenging?
    • Why is strength important for health and games?
  • Link back to developing confidence and personal bests. Encourage sharing of positive experiences.

Assessment and Differentiation

  • Formative assessment through teacher observation focusing on:
    • Participation and effort
    • Technique and control during exercises
    • Ability to work cooperatively in pairs/team
  • Differentiation via exercise modification, pacing, and support to suit individual physical needs and confidence levels.

Behaviour and Safety Notes

  • Emphasise safe movement and awareness of space.
  • Provide clear instructions for each station to avoid injury.
  • Encourage positive peer support and inclusive participation.

Extension Opportunities

  • Encourage pupils to create their own circuit stations in future lessons.
  • Home challenge: design a mini strength circuit to try with family or friends.

Summary

This lesson plan balances the National Curriculum expectations for strength and conditioning in KS2 with a fun, motivating approach suitable for low ability pupils. The mix of partner work, varied movement patterns, and reflection fosters not only physical development but personal and social skills, ensuring all pupils engage confidently and enjoyably.
