Teaching Instructions

I teach online and my videos are animated series with each episode a different topic and lesson focus. These are also hands on learning activities. I want to create a fun and creative lesson where I introduce subitising.

Subitising Fun

Objective

To introduce and explore the concept of subitising through interactive and engaging activities, enabling students to quickly recognise small quantities without counting. This lesson aligns with the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework, particularly focusing on the mathematical development goals.

Duration

7 minutes

Class Size

6 students

Curriculum Links

  • Mathematics: Number - Link to 'Using numbers to count and give quantities' (Early Learning Goal: Number).
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development: Encouraging sharing, turn-taking, and participating in a group dynamic.

Materials Needed

  • Animated video segment introducing subitising (1 minute)
  • Interactive counting flashcards (with 1-5 dots)
  • Colourful counters (soft shapes or plush toys)
  • A small box or bag for tactile activity
  • Whiteboard or large paper for drawing

Lesson Overview

Introduction (1 minute)

  • Begin with the animated video that introduces subitising through fun, cartoon characters who encounter different groups of objects.
  • Ask students to share their thoughts on what they saw in the video.

Interactive Activity (3 minutes)

  • Flashcard Activity:
    • Show flashcards with different numbers of dots (1, 2, 3, 4, 5).
    • Hold each flashcard up for 2 seconds, ask students to shout out how many dots they see without counting.
    • Encourage diverse responses and excitement by reinforcing correct answers with cheers or claps.
    • After each flashcard, discuss with students how they recognised the number (e.g., "Did you see the pairs?" or "How did you know it's four?").

Hands-on Counting Game (2 minutes)

  • Tactile Object Recognition:
    • Give each student 3-5 colourful counters.
    • Ask students to create their own groupings on their desks.
    • Then, ask each student to hide their counters in a small box or bag, then randomly pick one out and share the total quickly without counting.
    • Facilitators should encourage students to explain how they felt about recognising the quantity straight away.

Conclusion and Wrap-Up (1 minute)

  • Reconvene the group.
  • Summarise the key points of subitising learned from the activities.
  • Encourage students to look for groups of objects around their home or classroom and to think about how many there are without counting them individually.
  • Remind students that recognising patterns can help them in maths!

Assessment

  • Observational notes during activities to assess engagement and understanding.
  • Informal reflection at the conclusion to comprehend student comfort with subitising.

By the end of this lesson, students should be excited about recognising numbers at a glance, setting a strong foundation for numerical confidence!
