Lesson Structure
1. Starter Activity (5 minutes)
Objective: Engage students and activate prior knowledge about teamwork.
- Pose the question on the board: “What makes a good team?”
- Students think individually for 30 seconds, then share ideas quickly in a ‘Think-Pair-Share’ format.
- Teacher captures key terms on the board (e.g., communication, trust, respect).
2. Introduction to Team Roles (10 minutes)
Objective: Introduce students to common roles within a team.
- Teacher explains 4-5 typical team roles with simple descriptions (e.g., Leader guides the team, Timekeeper keeps track of time).
- Distribute role cards randomly to each student, explaining that they will practise these roles in group tasks.
- Highlight the importance of each role for effective teamwork, linking it to PSHE objectives about respect and responsibility.
3. Group Activity – “The Tower Challenge” (15 minutes)
Objective: Apply teamwork skills collaboratively.
- Students break into two groups of four. Each group receives building materials (e.g., paper, tape, straws) and a challenge to build the tallest freestanding tower in 10 minutes.
- Each student must perform the role assigned on their card.
- Teacher circulates to observe communication, collaboration, and role fulfilment.
4. Group Reflection and Discussion (10 minutes)
Objective: Reflect on the teamwork experience and personal contributions.
- Groups discuss what went well and what was challenging during their task, focusing on the roles played.
- Students complete a short reflection worksheet individually, answering:
- Which role did I play and how did I do?
- What did I learn about teamwork today?
- How can I improve next time?
- Volunteers share reflections with the class to facilitate peer learning.
5. Plenary (5 minutes)
Objective: Reinforce learning and consolidate understanding.
- Teacher revisits the key features of successful teamwork collected at the start.
- Ask students to write one word on a sticky note that describes teamwork for them and stick it on a “Teamwork Word Wall” poster for ongoing reference.
- Highlight the link between teamwork skills and personal growth, encouraging students to apply this learning beyond the classroom.
Assessment
Formative Assessment:
- Observation of students’ engagement, collaboration, and communication during the group activity.
- Quality of contributions during reflection and discussion.
- Completeness and thoughtfulness of reflection worksheets.

Differentiation and SEND Considerations
- Provide role cards with simple, clear instructions.
- Allow use of peer support within groups for students requiring social or communication assistance.
- Include visual aids and prompt questions during reflections.
- Optional extension: challenge more able students to consider how teamwork varies in different contexts (sports, school projects, family life).
Opportunities for Character Development and Cultural Capital
- Encourages respect for diverse personalities and strengths in collaboration.
- Develops self-confidence through active participation and role fulfilment.
- Fosters resilience and problem-solving in real-time challenges.
