I want to plan a focus lesson on relay races.

Teamwork and Speed

Lesson Overview

This 35-minute PE lesson will focus on developing teamwork, communication, and speed through relay racing. Students will practise various relay race techniques while enhancing their cooperation and coordination skills.

This session aligns with the UK National Curriculum for Physical Education (Key Stage 2), specifically:

  • Developing physical confidence in different physical activities.
  • Engaging in competitive sports and activities.
  • Improving technique in running events.

Lesson Objectives

By the end of the session, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate proper relay race techniques, including efficient baton passing.
  2. Understand the importance of teamwork in a relay setting.
  3. Apply speed and agility to improve relay transitions.
  4. Show good sportsmanship during competitive activities.

Equipment Required

  • 4 relay batons
  • 8 cones (to mark start and finish points)
  • Stopwatch (for timed races)
  • Whistle (for starting signals)

Lesson Breakdown (35 minutes)

1. Warm-Up (5 minutes)

Objective: Activate muscles, increase heart rate, and mentally prepare for relay racing.

  • Jogging & Dynamic Stretches (2 minutes):
    • Light jog around the playing area.
    • High knees, lunges, and arm circles.
  • Reaction Game: Coach’s Call (3 minutes):
    • The teacher shouts a command (e.g. "Touch the floor", "Run to a cone", "Jump"), and students respond as quickly as possible.
    • This improves reaction time, crucial for race starts.

2. Relay Race Fundamentals (8 minutes)

Objective: Teach correct techniques before competition.

  • Baton Grip & Passing Drill (4 minutes):
    • Students pair up and practise handing over the baton smoothly using an upward or downward exchange.
    • The receiving student should start running before reaching for the baton.
  • Running Starts & Acceleration (4 minutes):
    • Students practise explosive starts and transitioning into sprinting.

3. Team Relay Practice (10 minutes)

Objective: Apply skills in a structured relay race.

  • Formation: Teams of 5 to 6 students.
  • Race Setup:
    • Each team lines up at the starting cone and races back and forth in a 4-person relay.
    • Students run 10 metres, pass the baton, then move to the back of the line.
  • Key Focus:
    • Smooth baton exchanges
    • Speed adjustment when passing the baton
    • Team encouragement

4. Competitive Baton Challenge (7 minutes)

Objective: Encourage fun, competition, and strategic teamwork.

  • Obstacle Relay Race:
    • Students must weave through cones before passing the baton.
    • Encourages quick thinking and agility under pressure.
  • Timed Relay:
    • Each team aims to complete the relay in the fastest time possible.
    • Helps students focus on minimising mistakes and improving efficiency.

5. Cool-Down & Reflection (5 minutes)

Objective: Bring heart rate down, prevent injury, and reflect on learning.

  • Slow Jog & Stretching Sequence (3 minutes):
    • Walking laps around the space
    • Hamstring stretches, shoulder rolls, and deep breathing exercises
  • Discussion Questions (2 minutes):
    • What was the most challenging part of the relay?
    • How did teamwork improve your performance?
    • What techniques will you work on next time?

Assessment & Differentiation

Assessment Methods:

  • Observation of baton passing technique and teamwork.
  • Peer Feedback: Students give one positive comment and one improvement suggestion to a partner.
  • Teacher Reflection: Note students excelling in speed and communication for future development.

Differentiation:

  • For Less Confident Students:
    • Practise relay in smaller groups for individual guidance.
    • Allow a walking relay for focus on baton-handling skills.
  • For Advanced Students:
    • Introduce a blind baton handover, relying on tactile feedback rather than looking.
    • Incorporate a longer relay distance to challenge endurance.

Final Notes

This lesson promotes teamwork, agility, and coordination while incorporating fun elements of competition. By encouraging students to reflect on their techniques, they not only develop physical skills but also learn valuable communication and strategic thinking.
