The Mystery Challenge

Lesson Overview

  • Subject: PSHE
  • Year Group: Year 4
  • Lesson Duration: 60 minutes
  • Class Size: 25 students
  • UK Curriculum Focus: Relationships Education – Working Together and Teamwork

This lesson aligns with Personal, Social, Health, and Economic (PSHE) education under the Relationships Education strand of the UK curriculum. The focus is on developing teamwork, collaboration, communication skills, and problem-solving in an engaging and active manner.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students will:

  1. Understand the importance of working together as a team.
  2. Improve their problem-solving and communication skills.
  3. Develop patience, listening skills, and the ability to support one another.
  4. Successfully complete an interactive investigation through teamwork.

Resources Needed

  • Printed clues (prepared in advance)
  • Envelopes to hold the clues
  • Small props related to the theme (optional, e.g. magnifying glass, map, fake treasure)
  • Poster paper and markers (for group reflection)
  • Stopwatch or timer

Lesson Structure

1. Introduction (10 minutes)

Hook – Mysterious Arrival

  • The teacher enters the room wearing a detective hat or holding an envelope dramatically.
  • Announce that something mysterious has happened, and the class must work together to solve the case.
  • Divide students into five small groups of 5 children each, ensuring a mix of abilities.

Set the Scene

  • "A secret item has gone missing from our classroom! It has been hidden somewhere, and we need to follow the clues to find it. But beware—this challenge can only be solved if we work together as a team!"
  • Explain that they must listen to one another, take turns, and use cooperation to succeed.
  • Briefly discuss what makes a good team (listening, sharing ideas, patience, encouragement).

2. Main Activity: The Teamwork Investigation Challenge (40 minutes)

How it works: Each team receives a starting clue. The answer to the clue leads them to a new location in the classroom or school (pre-arranged by the teacher). They must solve all five clues successfully to find the final object.

Example storyline:

"Our class treasure—The Golden Star—has disappeared! The thief has left behind a series of clues, and only those who can work as a team will be able to recover it!"

Clues (examples tailored for Year 4 level):

  1. “Where do words live? Flip the right page, and you might find your next clue…” (Clue is hidden inside a classroom dictionary.)
  2. “I shine bright when it’s dark at night, but in our class, I help you see. Look for me where learning is lit!” (Clue is near a desk lamp or window.)
  3. “Numbers help you count and add—where do they sit all lined up?” (Clue is hidden inside a number line or near maths resources.)
  4. “Stay clean and tidy, that’s the rule! Your next clue hides by a washing tool.” (Clue near the sink or sanitiser station.)
  5. “If teamwork is strong, then victory is near! Where stories are told, you’ll find something dear.” (Final clue leads to a book corner containing the “Golden Star.”)

Rules for Success:

  • Teams must read the clue together before moving.
  • Every team member must contribute (e.g., reading, searching, discussing).
  • They can only move to the next clue when all agree on the answer.
  • Teams raise their hands for hints if needed (only two hints allowed!).

Once a team finds the “Golden Star,” they must return to their seats and discuss what went well while waiting for others to finish.

3. Reflection and Plenary (10 minutes)

  • Gather all students and discuss:
    • What helped your team succeed?
    • What was the biggest challenge?
    • How did you solve disagreements?
    • If you could do it again, what would you change?
  • Write key reflections on a large poster.
  • Link back to real-life teamwork situations (e.g., sports, group projects).

Final Thought:

End with a positive message:
"Teamwork isn’t about being the fastest—it’s about working together, supporting one another, and enjoying the journey!”

Assessment Opportunities

  • Informal observation during the challenge (listening, cooperation, leadership).
  • Student reflections in discussion.
  • Team feedback on problem-solving and communication.

Differentiation

  • For students needing extra support: Assign clear roles within teams (e.g., reader, searcher, recorder). Offer verbal guidance during challenges.
  • For higher-ability students: Allow them to create their own extra clue at the end for another team to solve.

Extension Activity (If Time Permits)

  • Build Your Own Clue Challenge: Each group creates one additional teamwork challenge for another group to solve next lesson.

Teacher’s Role Throughout the Lesson

✅ Encourage collaborative thinking rather than immediate answers.
✅ Give hints strategically to promote discussion.
✅ Observe social interactions and help model teamwork language (e.g., "Let’s listen to Emily’s idea," "How can we decide together?").

Conclusion

This interactive Mystery Challenge makes teamwork fun, engaging, and purposeful. It not only strengthens problem-solving skills but also connects personal and social development with real-world collaborative skills, essential for future learning and life.
