The Power of Service

Lesson Overview

  • Subject: PSHE
  • Year Group: 9
  • Duration: 15 minutes
  • UK Curriculum Area: Health & Wellbeing – Citizenship & Community Engagement
  • Learning Objectives:
    • Understand the benefits of helping others.
    • Reflect on how acts of service impact both individuals and communities.
    • Develop empathy and personal responsibility through real-life scenarios.

Lesson Structure

1. Starter Activity (2 minutes) – Thought-Provoking Question

Teacher Guidance:

  • Display the question on the board:
"Have you ever helped someone? How did it make you feel?"
  • Ask students to think quietly for 30 seconds, then turn to a partner and discuss.
  • Take 2-3 responses and reinforce the idea that helping others benefits both the giver and the receiver.

2. Engaging YouTube Video (3 minutes) – The Ripple Effect of Kindness

Teacher Guidance:

  • Inform students they will watch a short video highlighting real-life examples of how small acts of kindness create a ripple effect in communities.
  • Play a motivating, age-appropriate video that showcases acts of service, especially relatable to UK communities, such as people helping in schools, neighbourhoods, or charities.
  • After the video, pose a quick question:
"What stood out to you in this video?" (Take 1-2 responses.)

3. Interactive Task (6 minutes) – Real-Life Service Scenarios

Teacher Guidance:

  • Explain that students will work in small groups (3-4) to discuss a service-related scenario.

  • Provide each group with one of the following real-life UK-based scenarios and ask them to discuss:

    1. Helping a struggling classmate – A student in your class is falling behind in maths. What could you do to support them?
    2. Supporting a local food bank – Your school is running a food drive. How could you encourage others to get involved?
    3. Community Action – A local park is littered with rubbish. What simple actions could you take to improve your area?
    4. Online Support & Kindness – A friend is experiencing negativity on social media. How can you help them?
  • Plenary Question (2-minute wrap-up): Ask, "What is one small act of service you could commit to in the next week?" Call on a few students to share their answers.

Assessment for Learning (AfL) & Teacher Reflection

  • Student Engagement: Observe participation in discussions.
  • Depth of Thought: Assess responses to the plenary question – are students thinking practically?
  • Teacher Reflection: Consider how actively students engaged. If needed, reinforce the message in later lessons.

Why This Stands Out

  • Brief but impactful: A 15-minute session with high engagement.
  • Real-life relevance: Scenarios based on students' everyday lives.
  • Interactive & thought-provoking: Encourages critical thinking and empathy.

This PSHE micro-lesson delivers meaningful engagement in just 15 minutes, leaving a lasting impression on students about why helping others matters.
