Lesson Structure

Starter (5 minutes)

  • Activity: Quick class brainstorm: "What do you already know about Judaism?" Write keywords on board.
  • Brief introduction to key Jewish texts: Torah (first 5 books of the Hebrew Bible), Tanakh (the whole Hebrew Bible), Talmud (oral teachings and interpretations).
  • Show visual diagram illustrating these texts and how they relate.

Main Teaching (15 minutes)

  • Explain the Torah’s significance: sacred text, law code, moral guidance, and central to Jewish identity.
  • Discuss daily Jewish life and worship connection to Torah (synagogue reading, festivals).
  • Introduce kosher laws: what they are, examples (e.g., no pork, no mixing meat with dairy), reasons for keeping kosher (obedience, identity, health).
  • Use role-play: students act as rabbis/teachers explaining kosher rules to a new community member (other students).

Activity (20 minutes)

  • Menu Analysis Task: In pairs/small groups, students receive sample menus.
  • Task: Identify which foods are kosher and which are not; suggest changes to create a fully kosher menu.
  • Groups present findings briefly to the class, explaining reasoning.
  • Teacher circulates, offering support and challenging groups to justify answers with reference to Torah/kosher laws.

Plenary (5 minutes)

  • Group discussion: Why might following the Torah and kosher laws be important for Jewish identity today?
  • Recap success criteria; students self-assess understanding.
  • Quick word search or crossword (optional for fast finishers) revisiting key terms: Torah, kosher, Tanakh, Talmud.

Differentiation

  • Lower ability: Provide simplified menu with clear symbols for kosher/non-kosher; use vocabulary sheets; focus on recognising pork, shellfish, dairy/meat mix only.
  • Higher ability: Include deeper questions about the ethical reasons behind kosher laws; explore differences in interpretation between Orthodox and Reform Judaism.
  • EAL students: Visual aids, glossaries, peer buddies for language support.
  • SEN: Use role-play with clear scripts; allow oral responses or drawing to explain kosher food choices.

Extension Activities

  • Research project: Explore a Jewish festival (e.g., Passover) and describe how the Torah and kosher laws influence it.
  • Debate: "Is it important for religious rules, like kosher, to be followed strictly in today’s world?"
  • Creative writing: Write a diary entry from the perspective of a Jewish person explaining why the Torah is important.

Assessment

  • Formative assessment during group work and plenary through questioning and self-assessment.
  • Teacher collects menu task sheets to check understanding of kosher laws and Torah’s relevance.
  • Use mini quizzes or exit tickets with key vocabulary and concepts for quick review.

Reflection for Teachers

  • Monitor engagement in the menu activity to assess conceptual grasp of kosher laws.
  • Gauge success of role-play in reinforcing understanding of Torah’s relevance.
  • Adjust menus or activities for future depending on student confidence and interest.

This tightly structured, varied, and enquiry-led lesson plan both meets the KS3 National Curriculum requirements for Religious Education and engages a mixed-ability Year 7 class through practical, interactive learning, encouraging deeper appreciation of Judaism’s texts and dietary laws.
