Teaching Instructions

This is lesson 3 of 10 in the unit "Understanding Street Safety". Lesson Title: Understanding Traffic Signals and Signs Lesson Description: Students will explore the meaning of various traffic signals and signs. They will engage in activities to match signs with their meanings and discuss their importance in street safety.

Overview

This 30-minute lesson supports Year 2 students' developing understanding of how traffic signals and signs contribute to street safety. It directly aligns with the National Curriculum for England’s PSHE Programme of Study for Key Stage 1, focusing on personal safety and awareness in the community.

National Curriculum Links

  • PSHE Association Programme of Study (Key Stage 1 - Years 1 & 2):

    • Living in the Wider World > Safety and the Changing Body
    • Pupils should learn to recognise and manage risk in familiar situations and decide how to behave responsibly.
  • Statutory Guidance on Keeping Children Safe in Education:

    • Children to be supported to recognise risks and understand hazards in their environment.
  • DfE Relationships and Health Education (RHE) Guidance (2020):

    • Emphasis on teaching children how to stay safe when out and about, including understanding road safety and awareness of traffic signs.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, all students will be able to:

  • Identify common traffic signals and signs (e.g., pedestrian crossing, traffic lights, stop sign).
  • Explain the meaning of key signs and signals in simple terms.
  • Understand how these signs help keep people safe when near roads.

Some students will be able to:

  • Discuss why following traffic signals and signs is important for themselves and others.
  • Recognise traffic signals in their local environment.

Resources

  • Large printed pictures of common traffic signals and signs (traffic lights, zebra crossing, stop sign, pedestrian sign, school crossing sign).
  • A matching cards activity: one set of cards with images of signs, one set with their meanings written simply.
  • Whiteboard or flip chart and markers.
  • “Traffic Signals” song or chant (optional for energising the class).
  • A visual storyboard of a short scenario demonstrating safe pedestrian crossing, including traffic signs.

Lesson Structure

1. Introduction and Engagement (5 minutes)

  • Teacher begins with a brief discussion:
“Have you ever seen these signs when you walk or cycle near roads? What do you think they mean?”
  • Show pictures of 3-4 common traffic signs and pause for children’s guesses.
  • Relate to children’s own experiences by encouraging them to share if they have used a zebra crossing or waited at traffic lights.

2. Interactive Activity - Matching Game (15 minutes)

  • Divide the class into small groups of 4 (total 5 groups), each group receives a shuffled set of traffic sign cards and matching meaning cards.
  • Task: Match each traffic sign to its correct meaning.
  • Support: Teacher and teaching assistants circulate to guide and ask open questions like “Why do you think this sign says ‘Stop’?” or “What do you do when you see the green man at a crossing?”
  • After completion, groups share one matched pair and explain its meaning to the class briefly.

3. Storyboard Scenario and Discussion (7 minutes)

  • Using the visual storyboard, teacher narrates a child’s journey from one side of the road to the other, identifying traffic signs encountered.
  • Pause for questions after each sign:
“What should our friend do when they see the red light?”
“Why is the zebra crossing important?”
  • Reinforce the message: Traffic signals and signs keep everyone safe.

4. Plenary and Exit Reflection (3 minutes)

  • Recap the main signs discussed.
  • Ask each child to name one traffic signal or sign and say what it means.
  • Optionally end with a simple “Traffic Safety” song or chant to reinforce learning.
  • Provide positive praise, highlighting safe behaviours.

Assessment for Learning

  • Observation of group discussion participation during matching activity.
  • Verbal responses during the storyboard discussion demonstrating understanding of sign meanings.
  • Plenary reflections indicating retention of key traffic signals and their purpose.
  • Teacher notes to identify any misconceptions or further support needed.

Differentiation and Inclusion

  • For SEN learners: Provide picture-supported sentences for matching, additional adult support, and simplified explanations.
  • For higher-attaining pupils: Challenge by asking them to consider what might happen if people ignore these signs and to describe how they keep themselves safe.
  • Ensure culturally diverse examples where possible, acknowledging different community signage that may be familiar to children.

Extension Ideas (Optional/Home Learning)

  • Encourage children to spot and draw traffic signs they find on their way home or in local community areas.
  • Create a simple safety poster illustrating a favourite traffic sign and its importance.

This lesson integrates practical, visual, and discussion-based learning opportunities to solidify Year 2 children’s understanding of traffic signals and signs, empowering them to stay safe as pedestrians and community members.
