Overview
This 30-minute session is designed for Year 5 students (ages 9-10), focusing on developing their Spanish language skills by engaging with authentic film trailers and writing synopses. This lesson aligns with the National Curriculum for England’s Modern Foreign Languages programme of study, specifically targeting listening, reading, writing, and cultural understanding.

Key Stage 2 Modern Foreign Languages Programme of Study:
- Listening: Understand and respond to spoken language, appreciating stories and songs, and identifying key points and simple opinions (KS2 MFL, Years 3–6).
- Reading: Understand simple texts on familiar topics by identifying specific information and deducing meaning from context.
- Writing: Write phrases and short sentences using a model, with increasing accuracy, to express ideas and information.
- Intercultural understanding: Develop an awareness of Hispanic culture through authentic resources (film trailers), linking language learning to cultural enjoyment.
Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, the student will be able to:
- Listen actively to a Spanish film trailer and identify key information (plot, characters, setting).
- Read a short Spanish film synopsis and understand its main ideas and vocabulary.
- Write a brief synopsis of a Spanish film using familiar vocabulary and simple sentence structures.
- Demonstrate cultural knowledge by discussing preferences and opinions related to Spanish films.
Resources
- Projector or large screen to watch film trailers
- Printed copies of simple Spanish film synopses (level-appropriate)
- Notebook or writing paper
- Vocabulary prompt sheet focusing on film-related terms and sentence starters
- Bilingual dictionary (optional)
Lesson Structure
1. Starter (5 minutes)
Objective: Activate prior knowledge; introduce key vocabulary related to films and synopses.
- Begin with a quick discussion: ask the student about their favourite films in English and what they think makes a good film description.
- Present 6-8 key vocabulary words and phrases on the board or paper (e.g., película – film, personajes – characters, trama – plot, acción, comedia, drama).
- Use images or gestures to reinforce meaning.
- Encourage the student to repeat words aloud to practice pronunciation.
2. Main Activity (15 minutes)
Objective: Develop listening, reading, and comprehension skills related to film trailers and synopses.
- Step 1: Watch a short (1-2 minute) trailer of an age-appropriate Spanish film twice without subtitles. Coach the student to listen for specific elements: names or descriptors of characters, setting, and type of story.
- Step 2: Watch the trailer again but this time with Spanish subtitles (if available). Ask the student to note down any new words or phrases related to films.
- Step 3: Provide the student with a written Spanish synopsis of the same film (2-3 sentences). Read it aloud together, breaking it down and explaining unfamiliar words in simple terms.
- Step 4: Ask comprehension questions based on the synopsis (e.g., ¿Quién es el personaje principal? ¿Dónde sucede la historia? ¿Qué tipo de película es?). Encourage answers in Spanish where possible.
3. Writing Activity (7 minutes)
Objective: Produce a simple written film synopsis applying vocabulary and structures practised.
- The student chooses a Spanish film from a small selection offered (or from the trailers watched in the unit so far).
- Using the vocabulary prompt sheet and sentence starters (e.g., Esta película trata de..., Los personajes principales son..., La historia ocurre en...), the student writes a short synopsis (3-4 sentences).
- The teacher models examples and provides scaffolded support to ensure accuracy.
- Highlight the use of connectors (y, pero), verbs in present tense, and adjectives to describe characters and settings.
4. Plenary (3 minutes)
Objective: Reflect on learning and encourage oral practice.
- Ask the student to read their written synopsis out loud, practising clear pronunciation and intonation.
- Provide positive feedback focusing on effort and correct use of vocabulary and grammar.
- Invite the student to say which film they enjoyed the most and why, practising simple opinion sentences (e.g., Me gusta esta película porque es divertida).
- Recap new vocabulary and review one key sentence from the lesson.
Assessment and Feedback
- Formative assessment through observation of the student’s ability to identify information in the trailer and synopsis.
- Evaluate the written synopsis for use of taught vocabulary, sentence structure, and clarity.
- Oral reading during plenary to assess pronunciation and intonation.
- Provide constructive, personalised feedback to help improve accuracy and confidence.
Extensions and Differentiation
- For further challenge, ask the student to incorporate an opinion or recommendation sentence in their synopsis (e.g., Recomiendo esta película porque…).
- Use simplified trailers or synopses for learners needing additional support.
- Extend by comparing Spanish film trailers with English ones, discussing cultural differences in storytelling and film genres.
Cross-Curricular Links and Cultural Enrichment
- Integrates ICT skills by watching and analysing video content.
- Encourages cultural enquiry by exposing students to Spanish film culture.
- Supports literacy development through research, reading, and creative writing in a foreign language.
This lesson plan uses authentic and engaging multimedia materials to develop listening, reading, and writing skills in Spanish, in line with the National Curriculum's focus on practical communication, cultural awareness, and enjoyment of language learning.
