Year 5 History – 30 minutes

WALT

We Are Learning To place key events, people, and changes from the Tudor period in the correct chronological order.

National Curriculum Links

  • History Programme of Study – Key Stage 2
    • Pupils should be taught about: a study of an aspect or theme in British history that extends chronological knowledge beyond 1066
    • Significant individuals in the past who have contributed to national and international achievements.
    • Develop a chronologically secure knowledge and understanding of British history.
    • Use dates and terms correctly related to the period studied.

Learning Objectives

  • Recall and sequence key Tudor monarchs: Henry VIII, Edward VI, and Elizabeth I.
  • Order significant events in the Tudor timeline accurately.
  • Explain the importance of each monarch and event in the context of Tudor England.
  • Apply chronological language such as “before”, “after”, “during”, and “century”.

Success Criteria

  • I can place Henry VIII, Edward VI, and Elizabeth I in the correct order on a timeline.
  • I can explain one important fact about each Tudor monarch.
  • I can sequence key Tudor events in the correct chronological order.
  • I use chronological language when describing the timeline.

Resources

  • Printed timeline strips with key events and figures (with dyslexia-friendly fonts, e.g. OpenDyslexic or Arial).
  • Large wall poster for timeline display with Velcro or magnets.
  • Name cards for Henry VIII, Edward VI, Elizabeth I.
  • Sticky notes for children’s own event additions.
  • “Before & After” sentence stems.
  • Visual aids: portraits of each monarch.
  • Whiteboard and markers.
  • Timer or stopwatch.

Lesson Structure

1. Introduction (5 minutes)

  • Recap the timeline and key Tudor figures already learnt (Henry VIII, Edward VI). Use images to trigger memory.
  • Introduce Elizabeth I as the new figure to add to the timeline. Show her portrait and explain her importance briefly.
  • Use WALT and success criteria—write visibly for reference.

2. Main Activity — Timeline Ordering (15 minutes)

  • Provide each pupil with printed timeline strips showing key events such as:
    • Henry VIII’s reign
    • Edward VI’s reign
    • Elizabeth I’s accession
    • The English Reformation (key event under Henry VIII)
    • The Elizabethan Religious Settlement
  • Students work collaboratively to place the printed strips on the large classroom timeline display in chronological order.
  • Prompt them to use chronological language aloud ("Edward VI became King after Henry VIII died").
  • Each student arranges one or two strips and explains their choices to the group.
  • Encourage use of sticky notes for additional events/questions they may want to add.

3. Differentiation

  • Support: Provide dyslexia-friendly fonts and coloured overlays for strips. Use sentence stems for explanations like: "I know this happened before/after because…"
  • Challenge: Ask advanced learners to add 1-2 additional events or link cause/effect changes between monarchs for the timeline display.

4. Plenary — Reflect and Record (5 minutes)

  • Each pupil shares one fact about Elizabeth I and one event they placed correctly.
  • Teacher models writing one or two sentences using chronological language.
  • Students write or dictate their own chronological sentences using the sentence stems on mini whiteboards or paper.
  • Add their sentences or event sticky notes onto the display for ongoing reference.

Assessment

  • Observe and note which students correctly place events and explain their order verbally.
  • Check individual written/dictated sentences for correct chronological language usage.
  • Use quick checklist in notes for accuracy in sequencing and explanation.

Extension Activity (Optional)

  • Create a “Story of the Tudors” comic-strip or storyboard illustrating how the monarchy changed from Henry VIII to Elizabeth I, using pictures and captions in correct order.

Dyslexia-Friendly Considerations

  • Use clear, sans-serif fonts (OpenDyslexic, Arial).
  • Present information with plenty of spacing and avoid cluttered layouts.
  • Display timeline visually with images/icons alongside text.
  • Use colour coding for different monarch’s reigns to support memory and organisation.
  • Chunk information and instructions, providing them both orally and visually.

Notes for Teachers

  • Encourage active discussion by prompting “Why do you think this event happened before/after this one?”
  • Use role-play or simple drama to help solidify pupils’ understanding of monarchs’ timelines (e.g., “You are Henry VIII, what comes next after you?”)
  • Keep the atmosphere interactive and encourage the small group to support each other during the timeline placement.

By the end of this lesson, pupils will confidently sequence major Tudor events and figures and apply chronological language, deepening their understanding of this crucial period in British history.
