Key Stage 3: English - Reading and Viewing & Spoken Language

  • Reading and Viewing:
    • Understand and analyse different forms of texts, including multimodal texts such as film, with reference to purpose and audience (NC English, KS3)
    • Recognise how features and conventions shape meaning in different genres (English Programmes of Study)

Key Stage 3: Computing - Digital Literacy

  • Understand how purposeful digital content (e.g., music videos, documentaries) is created and shared (NC Computing KS3: Use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly)

Personal Development and Wellbeing (PDW)

  • Encourage cultural awareness and personal expression through creative activities, supporting neurodiverse learners with practical, sensory engagement (non-statutory guidelines for KS3)

Learning Objectives

By the end of the session, students will:

  1. Identify and describe characteristics of at least three film genres, focusing on documentaries and music videos.
  2. Understand the purpose and audience for each genre.
  3. Analyse how different techniques (e.g., visuals, sound, narrative) are used to engage viewers.
  4. Express their learning creatively through hands-on activities tailored for various learning needs.

Resources Needed

  • Tablets or laptops (to show brief clips)
  • Headphones (for individual audio engagement)
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed screenshots/stills from documentaries, music videos, and fictional film genres
  • Colouring materials, paper, and storyboarding templates
  • Sensory cubes or fidget toys (for ADHD/autism focus)

Lesson Structure

1. Starter (10 minutes)

Activity: Quick Draw – Genre Brainstorm

  • On the whiteboard, write "Film Genres" and ask students to shout out any genres they know. As they say them, write these down.
  • Hand out printed screenshots/stills; students classify images into genre groups (documentary, music video, fictional film genre, etc.).
  • Use sensory cubes/fidget toys during discussion to maintain focus and regulate sensory needs.

Purpose: Activate prior knowledge and engage students physically and visually.

2. Introduction to Genres (15 minutes)

Teacher Input:

  • Brief explanation of documentaries and music videos, highlighting:

    • Documentaries: Fact-based, informative, real-life stories, use of interviews, voice-over narration, factual tone.
    • Music Videos: Promotional, artistic, rhythmic editing, strong use of music and visual symbolism.
  • Show 2 short clips (2 minutes each): one from a documentary and one music video. Use headphones for immersive listening.

  • Pause after each clip to ask: “What techniques did you notice that make this genre unique?”

National Curriculum focus: Engaging with multimodal texts and understanding purpose and audience.

3. Group Exploration (20 minutes)

Hands-on Activity: Genre Storyboard & Collage

  • Students work in pairs (or individually if preferred) to create a mini storyboard or collage for either a documentary or music video idea, focussing on:

    • Purpose of their film (inform, entertain, persuade)
    • Key elements (interviews, music, etc.)
    • Audience (who would watch it and why)
  • Provide materials: printed examples, colouring pens, paper, storyboarding templates.

  • Encourage use of sensory breaks and tools as needed.

Differentiation: Allow oral explanations or use of symbols/pictures for students who find writing challenging.

4. Show and Tell (10 minutes)

  • Each student or pair presents their storyboard/collage: explain genre choice, key features, and intended effect on the audience.
  • Teacher prompts with questions to encourage deeper thinking: “How does your music video keep the viewer interested?” or “Why is your documentary important to share?”

5. Plenary (5 minutes)

Class Discussion: What did we learn about film genres today?

  • List 3 things new or interesting they learned on the whiteboard.
  • Quick round to share which genre they might like to explore further in future lessons.

Assessment

  • Formative assessment through group discussions and storyboards to check understanding of genre characteristics and audience awareness.
  • Observation of student engagement and ability to articulate genre features.
  • Use of questioning to gauge depth of analysis.

Additional Notes for Inclusion

  • Ensure activities allow movement and sensory regulation breaks.
  • Use multi-sensory input – visual, auditory, and tactile materials to aid engagement.
  • Provide clear, concise written and verbal instructions with visual prompts.
  • Encourage positive peer support to foster inclusive participation.

Reflection & Extension Ideas

  • Students could create a short, simple documentary or music video in later lessons using mobile devices, applying today’s learning.
  • Explore other genres such as animation, horror, or science fiction to contrast with non-fictional forms.
  • Integrate cross-curricular links with English (creative writing) and Computing (video editing basics).
